Can someone get me started in the right direction on a good hand load for the 300wsm

Mine likes RL 22 and RL 17 behind a 185 Berger or a 180 Interbond. I've never played with any other combinations because both bullets shot well with both powders.

what kind of groups are you getting

The Bergers with 63.0 grains of RL 17 shoot 1/2 minute 3 shot groups and 3/4 minute 5 shot groups. I've actually shot many 7 shot groups with this load and they were all 3/4 minute as well so I'm confident it's a 1/2 minute cold bore gun and a 3/4 minute higher volume shooter.

I don't remember how much RL 22 I put behind the 180 grain Interbond but 3 different powder charges all shot less than MOA.

The gun is a lightweight Browning X Bolt.

I've had good results with IMR 4350 and not so good with IMR 4064 and RL17 but each rifle is different. Working on a new H4350 load presently. My buddy has a RL15 load that's been working pretty well for him.gun)

Many different combinations will work well in the 300 WSM. I first found that my Model 70 Winchester would shoot 165 grain Nosler Accubonds and 165 Nosler Partitions very well with RL-19. After this I found that this gun would shoot 155 grain and 168 grain Sierra Match bullets very,very well with RL-19,Norma cases and WLRM primer.


I am now loading 185 Bergers, 190 Bergers with Norma cases, and both N165 and IMR-7828. 69 grains of N165 along with 190 Bergers gave me 2867 ft/sec and very good accuracy.

These are just a few loads that I have worked with. It depends on what you want to shoot. I have also worked up some great loads with Barnes 168 TSX bullets using N550 and RL-17 powders. If you want more specifics let me know.

If you really want to turn your 300 WSM into a hammer, try some Berger 215 hybrids or 230 OTM tacticals with a proper charge of 7828SSC. You should be able to push 230's to around 2700 and the 215s to around 2800 fps. I guarantee you can't push a 165, 180 or 200 grain load fast enough in a 300 WSM to match these heavies for retained energy and wind resistance.

24" bbl, 230 OTM Tactical touching lands, loaded with 7828SSC, CCI 200 in a Norma case. Ave. velocity 2698 fps. OAL 3.010 and still feeds through an FN built M70 action.

I have shot everything from 150's up to 208's in mine. I don't recall the 150 load but the 168's shot best for me with H414 and imr4350 with the edge going to 414. I moved on to 180's next with 7828 and had good results. My rifle hated 190 smks so I tried the 208 amax and h4831 next and that has been what I have shot since. I am getting 2950 and it is a hammer on whitetails. I started with norma brass and fed 215m, but for the 208 load I tried some nosler brass and fed 210m and have been very happy. My velocity spreads really tightened up going to the 210m primers.
