I'm getting ready to build a new rifle to shoot deer/elk out to 800 yds. I plan on picking up a clone 700 and a 24" barrel from either Hart or Kreiger chambered in 7 WSM. What are your thoughts on this chamber for this task? I would like to stay in a short action but I'm open to anything.

I JUST posted this on another thread, recommending the 7wsm!!!

Toss up b/w Hart and Krieger. I have both barrels. Only thing I'd change is barrel length. I'd give the short mag a bit more tube to work with. My minimum is 25" and if/when I get a 7WSM it will have 25, 25.5, or 26" tube on it.

Id choose a Stiller action; Jewell trigger and a 24" barrel from Brux chambered for the 7mm Rem Magnum ( NOT a short mag)

I just put together a 7mm SAUM on a long action Remington with a 26" #5 Kreiger. I get 2950 fps with a 180 Berger VLD using 66.0 gr of Retumbo. Either the SAUM or the WSM will work well for your purposes. A long action would allow you to get the most out of the cartridge with heavy bullets.

180VLD launched at 2950 will kill elk at 1000yards and deer at 1400.

For the OP, that means your 7wsm running the 180VLD at 2800 will easily kill deer and elk at 600-800yards.

Dan-
Did you test H-1000 and/or H4831sc in your SAUM? I'm building a SAUM but was going to test those two powders before Retumbo. Of course, your MV w/ Retumbo is very attractive for a 26" barrel (my barrel length).
thanks for any comments.

Here is all of the info I have:

New Nosler 7mm SAUM brass; 180 Berger VLD; 210M Primer in all loads. .015" into the lands (3.040" OAL). Temperature was 45 degrees.

Retumbo
64.5 gr 2869 fps
65.5 gr 2925 fps .40" @ 100 yards
66.0 gr 2950 fps .36" @ 100 yards

H1000
64.5 gr 2917 fps

Reloder 25
61.0 gr 2781 fps
62.0 gr 2811 fps .566" @ 100 yards
63.0 gr 2890 fps .485" @ 100 yards

I didn't experience sticky bolt lift on any load.

My plan is to play at 300 yards with 65.5 to 66.0 gr Retumbo and seating depth.

The rifle specs are as follows:

Remington 700 LA
Krieger 26" #5 contour; 1:9" twist; 5R rifled barrel
McMillan Remington Classic stock
Burris Zee rings and mounts
Leupold 6.5-20x50mm LRT with standard plex crosshair and M1 turrets
Remington Trigger
Beartooth Products cheek piece

Gunsmithing by Louisiana Precision Rifles

I hope that helps. Please post anything you come up with.

I just built a 7mm wsm on a Savage mod 112 action with a 24" Benchmark barrel. Kevin Rayhill from Stokade Guns did the work for me and guaranteed 1/2" moa and delivered ! It's a tack driver.

You can't go wrong with the 7mm wsm. The hunting load I use is 160g Accubond, with 66.5g 4831 and Fed 215 match primers @ 3000 fps.
