Vortex viper hs lr 4x16x44 ?

I am looking for a new scope for a .300wm. I will be using it for hunting mainly but also some paper shooting out to 500 yards. I am looking for a scope i can adjust for different yardages and not have to hold over with. My max is $500. I dont know many options so i am asking you guys, this will be my first scope to use the turrets with. So any advise would be great as well. Anyway i was looking at the vortex viper hs lr 4x16x44. Any input on that scope or any other suggestions on any other scope in that price range would be great. Also i believe the viper hs is moa/moa, if anyone could confirm that for me please.

i have the scope you're inquiring about, except mine is the regular version, not long range. in my limited testing with it, i'm very impressed. i chose the regular version over the long range for 2 reasons. it moves in 1/4 instead of 1/2 moa adjustments. plus it has covers for the turrets. i don't like the exposed turrets on a hunting rig. the verticle turret can be dialed and has several lines to show which revolution you're on and can be lifted and reset just like the LR version. i did a tracking test last weekend and it repeats very well, excellent would be a better term. i moved the turrets 20 moa up and down with each shot and the 2 groups printed about 20" apart. so to me the turrets are much closer to inched per hundred yards, not moa. glass is 500 dollar glass, the parallax can be taken out at any range. the reticle is a BDC type, not moa. all in all a very good scope, especially for the money.

Do a quick search on this section of the Forum. It seems there is a new thread on them every 2 weeks over the last few months.

Put one on Dad's rifle, it's a very nice scope.

so is the exposed turret on the lr model not sealed so dirt and water could get in? And are the markings on the regular the same as the lr just a shorter turret? And how does the bdc work, or does it?

i havn't held a LR version and would be highly surprised if they weren't sealed. but they aren't covered, exposed all the time and stick up farther. 2 things i don't care for in a hunting scope. yes, there are markings on the regular version that work just fine as a tacticle type turret. there are pictures on another post about this scope showing the turret. it's what made me get the regular version. i bought it to do long range shooting on a 6wssm and to be honest, i like the regular version better than the LR version for long range shooting!
the bdc reticle has 3 marks below the center which are 1.5, 4.5, 7.5 and the duplex is 11 moa. all the marks on the horizontal are 2 moa apart.

sorry to bug you one more time. do you use the bdc reticle or do you dial in?

it's good to know what yardage the marks on the reticle hit if you're in a situation where there isn't much time. i have my do everything gun that has a custom reticle put in that has a dot at every 100 yds to 600. this is the best way to do it if you're only shooting to 5-600 yards. for longer distances, dialing works better. basically i dial with my long range guns, and use the reticle marks for the shorter range carry guns. it's nice to have both options.
