I had a post about Wolves gone wild. To the friends in the LRH on line magazine.
Please read the post in The American Shooting Magazine, go this post and the info about the
damage the wolves have done to the Deer.
Iam not some slob hunter, nor am I a poacher or want people to kill every wolf on sight, the
people in Michigans UP are at there whits end.

For the life of me, I can't ascertain what the MDNR was thinking. They (wolf) was basically eradicated in the UP and now, it's as bad or worse than it was prior to eradication last tike around.

I keep wondering if they can 'hitch a ride' across the Mackinaw bridge and decimate the deer population in the lower. That might not be all bad for the thumb area with it's infected deer, but then again, wolves aren't selective as predators.

The wolf thing puts me in mind of the Aisian Carp barrier on the Chicago/Calumet Barge Canal and how something as basic as controlling a real threat can become a political football.

If, instead of using 'intellegent' thought, these people just used common sense, that' to me, would make more sense. I must be a monority however.

Sometimes I need to backtrack to remember where I've been. You did start the wolves gone wild thread to discuss this particular issue. To say the least the direction you pointed got changed radically. My apologies for my part in any of that, or any thing that would make you feel you need to state your integrity. Sincerely Sorry Carl

Same for me, KC. These discussion take on a life of their own sometimes, and not what the OP necessarily wanted to talk about. My apologies. Jon

Keith, well said, just goes to show how emotional this issue is on both sides.

Sportsman at this time feel pretty hamstrung by the environmentalist and Dept. of Nat. Res. We are losing something that we have held very dear for generations, and
the frustration shows.

For my se Michigan bro---Why are you blaming the MDNR for the wolf problem? They didn't introduce the friggin things into the UP where they are decimating the moose and deer populations! They came down from Canada just like they did in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Because they were/are on the ES list there hasn't been much that could be done other than killing ones that got into problems with livestock similar to the problems out west. FYI a few DID come across the ice a couple winters ago and have been documented by the DNR down in the Pigeon River Valley in the northeastern LP where our elk herd is located and where the deer have had the TB problems, not down in the Thumb area! Given a few years if they are not eliminated I'll bet the elk will start going down in numbers and it won't be that long until Michigan will no longer have a big enough herd to justify culling through the lottery that we have had for quite a few years.

I thought I read in our local paper , yesterday that the wolf is delisted and going to state control such as MT, ID? What I do know is that the mountainous steep stuff I hunt , the wolfs are really hard to hunt, between the 2 yrs I had tags I have in 100 days and yet to score. Heard them many times and tracks are everywhere these days

They were delisted last year in MT and ID and there are hunting and trapping seasons going on right now in those two states. They are also being delisted in the Great Lakes States and Wyoming, but that will open those areas to more lawsuits and injunction requests from the antis just like occurred for years out west. It will be some time before hunting will happen in those areas.

As of what I have been told, the MDNR raised them as a pack and let them go.
I do remember all hell broke loose loose when some person shot one that had a tracking coller on it...I have been told the MDNR did introduce them about 20 years ago.
I will check with them and and get back.
KC.

I went to the MDNR web sight and it looks like the DNR are planing to trap or and open up full
removal of this Animal.
I think they have seen the light as for"..Did the DNR bring the wolves into Michigan?
I sent a letter to Lansing asking the question..I was told they had a hand in this.

I think the MDNR started trapping and collaring wolves that were taking hold some time ago up in the UP, but I don't believe they ever freely did any introduction of the species. The same thing was said about coyotes years ago. The two things they have been successful at were elk and even more so the eastern turkey subspecies! They didn't have to introduce wolves with them being able to easily work their way over from WI and MN.

WI is not even talking about a wolf hunt. Since delisting they are going to control problem animals thru DNR removal. Thats all they have said so far.

WI introduced wolves about 3 years after they introduced ELK. We were supposed to have an estimated 2500 elk by now with hunts. guess what no hunt and around 200 elk, and that number is dropping every year.

More money that went into the hands of educated stupid state employees, by rights they must be stupid to introduce one animal so another can kill it.

Jim here in ID/WA they kept transplanting woodland caribou from BC. Until BC said they would not send them any more for cat food (lions). My recollection is that quote is close to how they put it. In spite of decreased access to that area, evidence of predation, and some that just walked home. Game departments public position is "POACHERS", when your game numbers start free fall expect to hear this a lot. Secures their position, denies their role, and doesn't challenge their degree from Walt DisneyUniversity.
