I have found four rifles for sale locally that Im looking at for a donor to build either a 300rum or a 30-338 lapua. Which one of these do you guys think would be the best one? (all descriptions are copied and pasted from original add)

1. Remington 700 .30-06 cal. 22 inch barrel with brand new Remington synthetic stock. This gun is in pristine condition and has about 30 rounds through it, all at the range. It comes with Leupold aluminuim one piece base with a Bushnell 3x9 scope, Uncle Mikes sling and owners manual. $475

2. Savage model 110 300 Win Mag With a Boyds thumbhols stock. Has mount and rings. firm at $400.00

3. Wetherby Vanguard wby 300 mag (copied from add) 24" barrel, satin blue finish on all the metal, checkered walnut action bedded to a Monte Carlo, injection-molded composite PG stock. With sling studs and hinged floor plate, comes with a Bushnell scope and rings. Without doubt the best rifle value. Has a few scuffs on the left side of the stock due to handling in and out of the safe, NO DEEP gouges. $425

4. Savage model 110 in 300WM. I purchased this rifle last year for my Elk hunt and never got to use it. Has 40-50 rounds through it and is very accurate. It does have some scratches from field use.It comes with a Nikon 4.5x14x40 Buckmasters BDC scope and a box of ammo. $550

Just found 2 more:

5.$400, Savage 111 Detachable box mag 270

6. Savage/stevens 200 300 winmag $270

Anyone of the long actions for the RUM. take your pic

None of them are candidates for a 338 Lapua. Savages cannot be done safely, and 700 will cost too much and is marginal at that.

If you want a Lapua, but the new savage 338s with action made for it. MSRP is $1500

Now the 700 can be made into a 30-338 Norma, which basic short 338 Lapua. you will need a new bolt from PTG $200 and some action work for sure.

However, you are not going to gain a lot over the RUM.

Stay with the RUM

Im going with what you said, 300rum
one of the savages comes with a 4.5-14x40 nikon buckmaster..thats a decent scope for an under 500 dollar scope dont you think?

The actions you listed are to short for either cartridge you are considering. You will have a single shot. My opinion is you will be very disatisfied pretty quick and wanting to retool soon. Wait for a good action for what you want to do. You need a long magnum action for the RUM or a wby mk 5 for best results with the Lapua. The mk 5 is also best for the RUM but it will work with some others.

Yep. There's even a dirt cheap mode 70 300wm in a nice stock that would be a great platform to build a 300 Rum on.

If someone doesn't jump on it pretty quickly I probably will.

It will work just fine. We have one built on a Savage short action that ejects spent rounds easily. For all those that read my earlier comment, I apologize... especially to Bounty Hunter. I was an *** in my comment.

check out grice gun shop in clearfield pa. 814 765 9273.
they have an exclusive special run from savage.
338 lapua ,26" barrel, det. extended box mag, muzzel brake, camo accustock, accu trigger. under 9 lb. $979.95.
it is built on the larger size action.
egw 1 pc base also available at $26.95.

Id rather buy a donor rifle local that I can see before I buy it, but I guess it doesnt really matter if buying one off the forum as long as it shows up.
I was under the assumption that a 300rum could be built off of any long action just by adding whatever bolt head is needed..is this wrong?
For the 30-338, cant a long action with the lapua head work? or do I need an action based just for the lapua?
If I have to buy an action made for the Lapua, then Ill just build a 338, but I really want a hot rodded 30 cal
Thanks for the help!

I would use the Rem 700 it has a stronger action, and is always favored by gunsmiths. if i were building it i would take the 700 to a gun smith that knows target rifles. ( might go ask the local S.W.A.T team who they take their rifles to) and tell him what you want.

Savage/Steves is the only one that you can buy with interchangeable bolt heads. Everything else will will require the bolt face to be machined larger, or purchase a replacement bolt assembly to accommodate the Larger Lapua base. To my understanding, the RUM uses a standard magnum bolt face. So if you buy a Magnum Long action from any manufacturer, it should work for the RUM. However when you get into the VLD style bullets (i.e. Berger, Matrix, Cutting Edge) the length of the bullet may play havoc on trying to use the magazine and require a little extra work to allow for a repeating action.

The savage can be done, however it is not recommended by the top savage smiths such as Fred Moreo at Sharp Shooter Supply who does more savages than just about anyone.

There is a reason Savage enlarged the bolt lugs and other parts when they went to a 338 Lapua on their new actions.

Just too marginal safety wise especially if you hit the high end, which everyone does. I do not like "significant emotional events".

Anyway no offense Liltank!
