savage 300 win mag

Easy.

Take the same money and buy a Stevens 200 in the 300mag or 7mm. Chuck the barrel and stock.

Buy a decent stock (B&C, Stockade, Choate,...)

Buy a NSS or SSS recoil lug.

Buy a decent quality barrel(Shilen, Criterion,...)

You'll be in the same ballpark money wise with a much better rifle.

geargrinder is on the right track

Savage or stevens action $250
Choate stock $175
McGowen barrel (have one on the site right now new 26" chrome molly varmint countour for 250 plus shipping) we will say $300
better recoil lug $30
Thats a total of $755

A new one in the model 11/111
$750 give or take

So if it were me i know what i would do. However i do not want to take anything away from the Savage rifles. I have several of them and would not hesitate to buy another one (actually just bought on of the Axis models in 223 and it shoots 1/4" groups at 100yards with handloads) However i do prefer a custom barrel whenever possible.

Ya thats sounds pretty reasonable. i actually won a savage axis in 270 and was thinkin about trading it in because the trigger pull is rediculous and i want to have a muzzle brake and accu trigger which the axis doesnt have. Have you had any problems with your axis?

I cut the spring as shown on many online videos to reduce the trigger pull from 7lbs to about 3. Shot a 5 shot group with it at 300 yards that was under 2". It was in a steady wind and they were strung horozontal. 3 of them were in less than a half inch. Personally i do not like muzzlebreaks because i do not always have time to put in ear plugs or muffs and shoot without protection and it always rings my ears good. The accutrigger actually does nothing for accuracy it is just an added saftey feature.

I agree with everyone on building one, I have a 7mm on a stevens action that I bought at gander mtn used for 188 out the door. The barrel is a 26" shilen that I purchased from a member on this site for 175 and was practically new. The rifle basix trigger cost me 96. A badger recoil lug was 28 and the bell and carlson duramax stock was 128 after shipping, it is amazingly accurate for the money invested. That's just 613. FYI other than cutting the spring on the axis trigger Timney now makes a replacement just for the axis for about 100 bucks and is adjustable for pull weight, creep and over travel from 1.5-4#s.
