I just. Bought a savage 111 LRH 7mm. I'm looking at scopes now and the one I want is a leupold 6.5x20x50mm. I was wondering if I need taller rings to avoid the 50mm end hitting my barrel(with 20moa base)??? Also what kind of ranges does a guy have to be shooting to go to the 20MOA base if he has a 30mm tubed scope???

It depends on how far you want to shoot to make a decision about a rail. that Leupold should get you easily past 1000 without the extra 20 MOA, but it won't hurt to have it if you're buying a rail already. I have the Burris Tactical 2 piece picatinny bases on a Savage 7mm WSM with a Sightron SIII 6-24 with 100 MOA of adjustment, and I have a full 57 MOA of adjustment left in my scope. That will get me out to 1550 yards without the extra 20 MOA.
How high are your rings? Generally speaking, with a standard contour and a 20 MOA rail 30mm mediums should be the most you'd ever need depending on your rail and ring combination.

From different websites I have crawled all over...they basically state that if you arent going to be shooting OVER 600 yards...you dont need a "rail" at all.
With that I still went and bought a 15moa rail just for S&G's....
and put medium rings on it. Im using a 5.5-20X50 Zeiss and clear my varmint taper barrel a LONG ways...Maybe this will help you out with low rings:

I haven't purchased anything except the gun. Need rings, base, and scope. Not sure how far I'll be shooting but it seems the 20moa base would be over kill if it will get me up to 1000 yards. Don't think I'll ever go beyond that.

I suggest that you consider the scope I have over the Leupold. I think the glass is every bit as good if not better than the Leo. You also get a lot more options to which will help you shoot more accurately. It also comes with an illuminated reticle. The warranty and customer service is second to none.
It is a Vortex 6-24x50mm PST FFP MOA with a custom turret. It tracks perfectly and has always returned exactly to zero every time. The custom Vortex is dead nuts accurate at all ranges. The scope cost $899.95 and the custom turret about $100. How does that match up to your Leo and the Vortex has a much better reticule IMHO.
If you do decide to get a custom turret DO NOT ONLY trust a computer program. Shoot a drop chart with your reloads and YOUR rifle so the turret maker can match the turret to the trajectory of your bullet as it goes down range.

I told them where I was going to hunt which was in Wyoming at an elevation of 4,500 feet and they matched my bullets ark (PERFECTLY) from my 200 yd. zero to 900 yds. which was for my 6mm Norma BR. using Berger 105 VLDs. I gave Vortex the temperature and they adjusted the velocity to match the ark.
I only made my zero & then shot at 300 yes. then at 400 yds. Just like I explained in my thread for making my drop chart.
How did you like the target that the first time I adjusted the turret to #4 for 400 yds. to see if I was even going to be on the target. When I was in Wyoming I went to a range to shoot gongs at 700 yds. and hit a 7" gong 3 out 5 times with a strong cross wind coming from right to left. I also hit every gong from 200 yds. all the way out to 1,200 yds with help from the trainers there telling me how many clicks for the wind at the much longer ranges.
