Hi all I'm new here. But need some expert help.
I own a Remington 660 in 308. I am mainly just a hunter shooter. So I go out sight in the rifle then go hunting, And put it up for a year . I have been some what disappoint with the groups I get from my 660 . Granted I have never had to shoot an elk past 70 yards.. Just good luck though. I would like to feel comfortable out to 200+ ish yards. But with the groupings I get with the 660. Fist sized at best. At 100 yards I don't think I am up to it. I have been looking at getting some thing like the marlin,xl7. In an 30-06 or 308 ,or a savage axis . Or should I maybe get a new scope or do some thing else to. To. 660 to make is shoot better.. I hear they are suppose to be a good shooting gun.. I just have never found that.. The scope I have now is weaver 3x7 something, it has had some problems fogging and the back lens was knocked out by the recoil then glued back in.
I mainly hunt elk in Wyoming. I have take 5 elk, and 2 dear with the 660 since I got it a few years back.
Thanks for any thoughts!

I can comment on the Marlin xl7. They are nice rifles for the money. The 30-06 right out of the box shot 1" to 1 1/4" groups at 100 yards with factory ammo. The cheap part of the rifle is the stock, you can upgrade it with a boyds stock if you like. BTW i own two marlin xl7's and one is being built for 800-1000 yards with new barrel.

The axis are not that great. Good luck with your choice.

If you get a new gun you probably need a new scope anyway, glue and scopes don't really mix. Why not get a new scope now and see if that gets your 660 to shoot a better.

+1, go and get yourself a good scope. The new Redfields, Weaver grand slam, Vortex Diamond Back/HS/Viper. Nikon Buckmaster or prostaff would all be good options on a low dollar good quality optic.

Thank so much for your time and thoughts.
The rem 660 seems to have gone up in value a fair bit in the last few years.
I also had a friend look at some of the rifels I was considering at cablas. His recommendation was to send the scope back to weaver as a place to start. Then check the bedding of the action. There is also a trigger recall on the 660 . So I tnk I will send it back too. And go from there... Then probaly get a vortex scope.. I realy like there glass. Then after all that .. If I am stll not happy look at a new gun.

for a carbine it is a little heavy. you have already made it work. it has a good trigger. either keep it. it has a good trigger. and it is a good rifle. the axis and rem 770 are not. if you do sell it i would get a rem 700 or tikka. i good scope is worth it . i would get a 3.5X10X40 leup. sell the other.

Don't be afraid to clean it properly either. If there is copper buildup or carbon buildup it sure won't help the accuracy.

Carbon fiber rod, proper bore guide, nylon brushes and Boretech Eliminator.
That will get you started. :)

It does have a nice trigger! It is suppose to go back to remington for a safety recall. I think they will replace the trigger.. Should I not and keep the old one? Do any of you know more about that?

I still am realy tempted by that marlin.. They have one in stainless for 350 right now.
Any one know the weight difference between the marlin and the 660?

By the way what do you mean by " it's a little heavy for a carbine". Are you talking about the physical wt.. Or caliber?

I realy apricete all your thoughts..

For $350 just buy the Marlin and set the Remington in the corner of your gun cabinet. Not a big deal.
