My son has been borrowing a Rem 700 7mm Rem Mag from my neighbor, it's time to get him his own long range rifle. I was thinking carefully about a Winchester model 70 Extreme Weather, seems to get good reviews. I was also thinking about a Savage 111 All Weather. Although we shoot a lot we're still very new to long range shooting so we'd like to have something out of the box that will shoot fairly well. I'd like to hear about experiences with either of these 2 rifles and shooting in the 500 - 700 yard range.

Gary, I really can't add too much about the EW yet.. I just bought one in 300WSM. I am not trying to make it an extreme long range rifle, but a great packing, solid 500-600 yard elk rifle. Being a Winchester nut I like the rifle a bunch. Has a decent enough stock on it and seems to be well built. I don't see many issues that will prevent it from being a great shooting rifle. I have the B&C Medalist on my 338WM and like that stock a bunch as well. Savage makes nice rifles as well, but I tend to lean towards Winchesters for my own stuff. Good luck with whatever you decide. I'm a huge fan of the Winchester Model-70. Between my dad & I we have quite a few.
I've read a lot of Positive reviews on the extreme weather s.s. & I've come to trust the Model-70.
Of the 5 Model-70's I load for, 4 shoot .56? /.680/.86?/& .813 five shot groups at 100. All EASILY SUB MOA. Thats an average of 3/4 MOA for 4 factory plain Jane rifles.
My other is a Model-70 300wby that occasionally shoots sub moa but averages 1"+/- 5 shot groups at 100.
So, ya I'd buy one in a heartbeat. It's a ready made package that looks to be ready to rock right out of the box without spending tons of $ to get it to l/r standards. Great tuneable factory trigger, great l/r stock, great action, Hard to beat that package.
You may note that my opinion is quite bias in favor of Winchester.
But they earned thier way into my opinion.
There's quite a few fans of the other brand you mentioned too. I like mine smooth, AND accurate, so thats one strike against Savage for me. They are rough as a Cobb, & feel quite a bit like thier pricetag, cheap. But a lot of guys love em, & they do shoot well on average. Ask bigngreen. He LOVES his Savages (hes also my buddy, so I'm sure hell chime in singing thier praises)
You can't build a fanbase on accuracy without having accurate rifles, so Savage has earned thier reputation too.
In short you really can't go wrong with either Brand. All major manufacturers make a quality product, & occasionally a lemon slips thru, but the two models mentioned are known for being very accurate. So, besides a small bit of luck it comes down to personal preferance.
If a guy has a delima, you picked a good one to have.

I have to agree with winmag, the winchester is a nice rifle and looks and feels nice. savages look a bit rough, every winchester I have owned..(3 of them) have also shot well under MOA not sure why i dont own more but I have had my eye on an EW..

I really like the Winchester. I have to keep talking myself out of buying one, cause if I do then I need another scope. It would have to be a caliber I don't already have, so then I need dies. Which might be an easy way to sort out your dilemma, if the caliber you want isn't available in one or the other. It's ultimately about preference, you'll likely get a good rifle either way.
Thanks for all the replies. I placed the order today, my local shop had a tough time finding one but came through for me. Should have the rifle in a couple of days.
I'm still looking but optics wise it looks like I'm going to put a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 Rapid-Z 800 on it.

Hopefully we'll be shooting it next week.
Dropped my son off at hockey and stopped in a local gun shop to kill some time. Walked out with a 1910 Savage 99 in 303 Savage and a box of 20 rounds. It was so pretty, I just couldn't help myself. We'll be shooting this one over the weekend.

Picked up the rifle yesterday from a small dealer near us, Legacy Firearms. Based on the prices I've seen online I think I got a great deal and it took him less than a week to get the gun. Most online places were oos. I really like supporting local dealers and Ron was terrific to deal with.
My son flipped when he say the rifle, he's going to be very happy with it. I have on order the HD rail and rings from Evolution Gun Works. I saw mixed reviews but there were enough positive that I thought I would give them a try. They also help making sure I got the combination that would work with the rifle and the Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 that is going on it.

Garry, that is just about the same set up I will go with on my 300WSM. I will use the EGW rail, PRW rings and probably a 3x15 Minox. Overall, I think it will be a great combo. Looking forward to hearing how your shoots. I haven't heard too many complaints from the EW's at all. The new triggers are AWESOME. Scotty
