7mm08, RE17 & the 154 SST?

Looking for a good recipe for this combo, I think the 154SST is an ideal bullet for all around deer hunting, and would like to use RE17 since it'll give the best velocity for the powders I have on hand. Thanks for the replies.

Well, I see the max is 47.5grs so maybe a load of 46-46.5grs might be a good load, try it and see, LMAO!

Keep me posted on your findings. I'm using Varget, 4350 and R-15 and 140gr Bergers, Ballistic Tips and Barnes Tipped Trippleshock. All give good results. Still haven't found "the one" yet. Next on my list is the 120ge bullets (Ballistic Tips). Many 7-08 lovers think it's the best choice. By the way, the Hornady SST's are great.

I have found that 150gr bullets work well in a bolt action 7/08 pistol with shorter barrels
and shots 100 to 600 yards.

In a rifle with a 20"+ barrel the best load for trajectory,velocity and knockdown power
the 120 grain Ballistic tip @ 3000 ft/sec+ is the ticket.

I use 4350 with the 150s and H414 or Varget with the 120s. Varget is preferred over all
other powders because it is not heat sensitive like the H 414 or the reloader powders.

H414 is the most accurate in my rifle but with temperatures ranging from the 20s to 100o
the velocity will vary from 3010(winter) to 3155 (Summer).

On my sons 7mm-08 I use IMR 4350 49 grains of powder a compress load with a fed 215 primmer and a 145gr speer BTSP and winchester brass. 608 yards my son got a 5 point buck with it today my longest shot with this load is 567 yards on a doe last year.Now I have to beat my sons shot.I use this load in a thompson encore with a 24 inch barrel.

Agreed. Generally speaking, the 120grain bullets are the go-to choice for the 7-08. If you want to shoot the 150+grain bullets, step up to 280Rem or bigger. My 280 shoots the 168vld at 2780fps which is sufficient to take deer at 1k yards.

Well, 42grs 2000MR will push a 162AMAX over 2700fps, I dont see the need to go to a 280 with that velocity.

Enigma, Id never even think about using a 215 primer in my 708 but if it works for you, I use CCIs or Rem 9 1/2s, and have loaded some WLRs since I have thousands of them.

I once used 760 with 150NBTs, the accuracy wasnt there, then I tried varget, accuracy restored. RE15 does very well, too as seen in the left target, right target is with the 150NBTs.
