Greeting!
I'm hoping someone can give me a "light" to what is going on with my Remington .270, topped with a Leupold 3x9 VARX III. Or, more than likely, what is going with "me" and my use of my Remington .270.... (I.e. It's a poor crafstman that blames his tools. LOL.) Anyway...
I've sighted in a few rifles in my time, but's it been a few years since having done so. So, I'm thinking I might be missing something, or, just been lucky in the past.
First, you should know, I bedded and floated the barrel of the rifle a couple weeks ago using Devcon 10110 as a bedding compound. I'll say that the job turned out great and I floated the barrel starting at 1.75" ahead of the receiver lug, down the channel, with the thickness of 2 strips of masking tape. It passed the dollar bill test with no problem.
I headed out to the local range and I started at the 25 yard mark. My first shot was 2" low and 2" right. I made my adjustment and got the 3 shot grouping I wanted, which was 2.5" above bull. I was grinning from ear-to-ear because I was shooting a rather tight clover leaf. Than, I moved to 100 yards for the fine tuning -- if any (I thought).
This is where it got interesting. I squeezed off my first shot and I wasn't even on paper! I thought, "that had to be me!" Squeezed off another; same thing. The problem was that I only had a couple 8x12 targets out there and all the real estate surrounding them was peppered with bullit holes from previous shooters. So, I really couldnt' see where I was impacting off target.
Than, I ran out of time -- the range closed. The targets I was using where those made by Bullseys that are black and have the yellow backing so it's easy to pickup your shot placements. I walked out to retrieve my target stand and, sure enough, complete misses. But, something I did notice was small yellow "specs" (about 12-15 of 'em) all the target (?). Than it occured to me, could I be hitting the dirt in front of the target by several feet which is causing small bits to hit my target and cause these "specs"?
I started thining about my "session" when I was working at 25 yards; thinking maybe I was sighting in not accounting for parallex. But, I fired several shots and couldn't imagine not seeing a shadow - the site picture looked real clean around the circumference of the scope. (I hope. LOL.) Also, shots were not quick, and the barrel did not heat up.
