I need some advice on my first custom rifle, all input is welcomed.

I currently have a Rem 700 7mm Ultra Mag, my plan is to take the action off and have it blueprinted, add a new barrel and new stock and chamber it in a 7mm WSM. My reasons for wanting to use the long action is #1- it is what a have for an action to build off of, and #2- I want to use the longer bullets like the 168 Berger VLD's and have them be able to fit in the magazine. I've been reading on here about "throating" the 7WSM for the VLD's but what exactly does that mean or do, and would I even need to do that if I'm using a long action? Also if it is throated for the VLD bullets will they be the only kind of bullets that it will shoot?

Thanks in advance for any and all info, advice, and thoughts, it will be greatly appreciated.

The longer throat allows you to seat VLD's farther out before they contact the lans.

If you throat it specifically for those longer bullets seated farther out, the odds are bullets other than the very long bullets will perform well because they'll have a longer run up before jamming into the lans.

The length of the action has no impact on what happens in the throat

Have your gunsmith rent or buy a reamer with extra freebore(about .110"-140" throat) rather than using a standard saami spec 7wsm reamer and following it with a throater, that usually doesn't work as well, and if you decide to shoot hornadys, noslers, swifts, etc they usually do not have issues being jumped even as far as .300".

Look at the 7mm LRM. Brass will be out in febuary. Adds 150fps to the wsm and will be perfect in your long action. Sends a 168 at 3300 and a 180 to 3150.
