Does anybody have any feedback on the Mossberg 4x4 line of rifles? I know they are a "no frills" rifle, but the 4x4 I viewed on their website is actually got what appear to be some "upgrade" features that come stock from the factory.

First of all, it has a zero-creep trigger (similar to Savage's Accutrigger) which is adjustable to 2 lbs.

It also has an attractive monte carlo laminate stock.

Finally, it has a 24" fluted barrell, which comes wtih a muzzlebreak.

It LOOKs like a decent rife.........

But, does it shoot?

Anybody got any experience with these rifles?

They are getting pretty decent reviews in shooting magazines. They won't set course records, but accuracy is good. Dad has one in a 30-06 that shoots really well. For a first time gun or one to be put in a truck, I wouldn't hesitate to do it.

Thanks for the reply, Tank! So, just how well does your dad's Mossberg shoot? And, is it the 4x4 model as I described in my opening tread? Are we talking 2" groups at 100, or is it anywhere close to moa (or sub moa) at 100? Just curious to see how this "no frills, budget gun" stacks up to .....say..... a Savage or Tikka or 700.

Thanks again!

I know this isn't saying much, but it stacks holes at 50yds. That is all the farther we had to shoot the one and only time I got to shoot it. Publications in shooting times and Rifle Shooter magazine state .8" to 1.5" depending on ammunition used. If you hand load, I'm sure you can rain that in to be consistent. Heck, 1.5" is good to 300yds in my opinion. I know from watching Guns and Ammo Tv, and Guns and Gear, they really like the Mossberg MVP and its accuracy. I would expect the same out of the big guns.

Comparing them to Tikka and Savage are little harder. I'm sure it could keep up with the right ammo. But I'm a Savage guy and probably will be for a long time unless they do something stupid or QC goes down hill. I wouldn't be afraid to buy a Mossberg, but its just not what I want at this point and time. If I do buy one, it will be the MVP.

Thanks again, Tank! I reckon I will keep the 4x4 in mind for a LR rifle, if and when the time comes that I actually make a purchase.

I found a review that Dave Petzal wrote, and he gave it a very positive review. I also found another review, and its writer got anywhere from .6 to 1.2 inch groups (5 shots) at 100 yards. So, I have no doubts that the rifle will shoot.

And at around $500 to $600 bucks, that would be hard to beat.

I know this really don't answer your question, but for the same price (even cheaper) look at the Savage Axis. I got one in a 243 for a 'beat around' coyote/deer rifle. This thing out-shoots a lot of my higher end guns! With factory ammo! I'm gonna load for it when I get time...I really think I can get this thing in the 2's pretty easy. Heck it's shooting 1/2 to 5/8's now. I'm sure the Mossberg is a good choice as well. God bless........

Shot it today

Shot today my recently acquired brand new Mossberg 4x4 in 30-06, black plastic stock, muzzle brake, and scope combo.

The stock itself appears to be cheap and wraps at the barrel easily touching the supposedly "free-floated" barrel. The bolt is far from glass smooth and requires some effort to get it out of and into the battery. The mag is cheap plastic.

Took the stock off, adjusted the trigger to its minimum of 2 pounds or so, bought two boxes of 30-06 -- one Winchester Super X, the other Remington Core Lokt.

Despite of all seemingly cheapo stuff, the first shot was just a few inches low but windage was right on. A few clicks up on the scope and I was within 1 inch bull's eye circle on my target. I shot four 3-shot groups with one ammo and the same from another box. Both ammo are the cheapest I could find in my local gun shop, nothing special about it. 180 grain bullets, lead soft point, semi-jacketed. The result is, without any modifications to the gun, it surprisingly shot within 1-1.5 inch groups

I actually own several Mossberg rifles and shotguns. The 4x4 is absolutely amazing. I shot a 14 pointer last year that scored 150 in East, TX. I shot it at about 145 yards; straight through the heart. Later on I took my 4x4 to Bandera, TX and shot 3 more deer at 125 yards and more. You can not go wrong with the Mossberg 4x4. Finally, you can kill a deer with a $900 Remington or a $450 Mossberg; either way dead is dead and you can actually kill the deer with money in your pocket. gun)

If they are shooting that well out of the box with factory ammo, a little basic accurizing and load work up should make it a real shooter.

I have purchased the 30-06 model with a walnut grain stock. It is one of the best looking rifles on the market . Regardless the low price tag. As for accuracy?? Its as good as the Marksman behind the trigger. I love to shoot it and show it off. I've read all the bad and ugly about Mossberg . I've owned mine now for almost 2 years and don't regret one moment.

About two gun shows ago, I picked one up for about $365.00. It is the wooden monte carlo stock w/o iron sites. I wish it had them. I like the back up and challenge of iron sites. Anyway I took a cheap Tasco scope off my Marlin 336 and simply slapped it on. Though I didn't have the opportunity to really sight it in, I was able to pop a 16oz soda bottle at 100 yards.

The first time I loaded the magazine, the rounds settled in very nicely. However, after popping the mag into the rifle. I cycled the bolt and the mag fell out. Naturally I was bummed, but I shoved it back in there and remembered from that point on to not baby the rifle.

The same goes with operating the bolt. It is nothing as smooth or precise feeling as a 30-40 Krag. It is a bit loose until it locks up so. If you baby it or question your cycle and pull back on it again you will find that you will be picking up another round before fully chambering the first. So, don't sissyfy your operation of this rifle. It can take it. Cock it like you mean to and you will be fine.

The rifle feels really good in your hands. It also shoulder well for this short armed 6'1" Texan. In a 30-06 the recoil is solid and satisfying. NO pain, just really nice.

When I took it shooting with some friends, I let them try it out, No one missed the gong, ever from a standing unsupported stance, and we had some pretty strong colorado mountain side wind. It did catch a lot of wind which was a bit frustrating but expected. Though each person babied it as I have described above, they got used to it and really appreciated that I let them fire it. Now they want a 30-06 because of this rifle.

As for me, I think I will use it for long range just to see what it can do. Maybe I'll get a better scope. Not sure about that yet. I would like to see if the recoil destroys the cheapy Tasco or not. I suspect not because it it not that bad with this rifle. I think I will see what it can do on the cheap.

If I were to change anything at the MFG, I would have adjustable iron sites on every model. I would also like to have a 10 round magazine for the range. Because once I got going on it I was disappointed when I had to stope and reload.

Short story is it is a nice rifle and more affordable then the nose-up-in-the-air rifles.

PS. I say Nose up in the air rifles because I was talking to a Leopold rep at the gun shop about the scopes. During his spiel that they can make the scope to fit the round and the rifle, he asked me what I had. When I told him…..he stopped talking to me. I don't think I will ever buy one of those scopes, not even for my Browning X-Bolt White Gold.

BUY a 4X4, I think you will like it.

I don't own a 4x4 but last fall I was looking for a little knock around .223 to ride around in the truck with me and I stumbled into a review of the mossburg MVP. Well I happen to find one at the local gun shop and picked it up.

I was a little hesitant about the action as it felt pretty cheesy, but the looks and feel of the rifle sold me so I bought one and let me tell you it is a suprising little rifle. I never shot any factory ammo just broke the barrel in with a some hand loads I had and started load developement. It didn't take too long to see it liked heavier pills and I settled in with 69 grain smk's which worked out well since I had that bullet in mind when I bought it.

Well long story short this little rifle will shoot .5 or better at 100 yards and I think if I bed the action and tinker with it a little more it will shoot even better. If I had a bitch it would be the length of pull is mighty short, but nothing you can't get used to. All in all I would take it over any of the ar-15's I have owned cause I have always been a bolt gun guy and having the ability to use 20 or 30 round mags for rock chucks and gophers is awesome.

Here is a pick

Can you tell me about your scope and the bipod.

Also, what do you mean by Bed the action?
