Cabelas is having a sale and they have modepl 700 adl's for 400 with a cheap scope. I was wondering if the gun was a good foundation for a long range shooter out to 1000 yds. I would be getting it chambered in 300 win mag and hand loading. I'm just getting started so any input would be great thanks.

By the time you get the action itself cleaned up...and barreled...etc...you basically tossed your $400 out the window

It's a good starting point. You could take it apart and sell off the barrel, scope, rings, bases, and stock. Take the action to a smith and have him give it the treatment of accurizing the action and trigger job. Buy a good quality barrel, rings, base, and scope, and stock and your good to go. OOOOR you could just buy a Savage.:D I'm partial to Savage, but the ADL platform is a good start.

It's true. The Savage is a great way to go if you're looking for a donor action. For the ADL, it's OK, and you could recoup some of your money by selling off the scope and mounts. You're still going to be in it quite a bit for accurization, bedding, and trigger when all is said and done.

Assumption: " I would be getting it chambered in 300 win mag and hand loading." means that your original purchase from Cabalas will be in 300 Win Mag.

With that assumption I would:

  1. Pillar and skim bed it
  2. Use a partial Tubbs Final Finish process on it. (partial means don't shoot the courser bullets and only half of the rest.) Works for me.
  3. Work up your loads to the point where you can get 1 shot per day for 5 days inside of 1 MOA @ 100 yd you have your self a great starter rig. You will by the time you work out to 1k know if the 1 MOA consistency is good enough.
  4. Oh, you'll have to get a 1K, any light condition, quality scope.
If the above assumption is incorrect. GO THE SAVAGE ROUTE as suggested.

I dislike the unsightly screw head on the savage but love the rest of the action especially the interchangeable bolt heads.

Keep in mind the "inexpensive isn't always cheap".:) Learned that the hard way.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the feedback. I will get into a savage if they are that much better out of the box.

Great way to get a new, un-tampered with by back yard "smith" action and you get to play with the original cal. to see if thats what you want. I buy several long action cal.s when they hit the "under 400.00" price point. ADL, BDL, SPS, all the same action, just different finish, stock, etc. AND i like the rem. to build on.

Rem700 ADL is a great starting point. Not too expensive and with a minimum of work can really be transformed into a shooter. As an example, here's my nephew's rifle that started life as a "Cabela's Special"....

Whereas your nephews rifle looks great the addition of the Leupold scope and some cosmetic changes/ additions ( and thats exactly what they are...cosmetic changes) that dont make it into a 1000 yard weapon....and thats what the OP asked about. And to have the Rem 700 action REALLY "tuned up" it takes a lot more than a minimum of work and most of that work had better be done by a qualified machinist!

If you are only wanting the action to build off of then it is a good start.

By the time a machinest / gunsmith gets done makiing the 700 action BLUEPRINTED...you might as well ( and you would be better off $$$ wise) to just buy a custom action from the get-go. All the "faults" of the 700 have been side stepped in the making of the typical SST rem "clone"

If you dont believe me...price a Stiller Predator as compared to 1) an unmodified Rem 700...and 2) a truely blue printed 700.

I did..thats why I went with the Predator on my last rifle.

My gunsmith will lap lugs and square the action for 80 bucks. SO 400 for action and 80 for trueing equals 480 dollars. I have not been able to find a custom action for less than twice that.

But those tasks are FARRRR from actually blueprinting that action.

Take a look at Blueprinting a Remington Action Video by MCR

for whats involved...and if your mechanic is doing THAT for 80 bucks...he already owns a goldmine
