Differences for my use would be the 4X end will be better at both ends of the day as far as light goes. Also greater field of view at the low end.

With identical reticles (fine) and equal glass the 14 is plenty for LRH.

Much greater than 14 gets to be a spot of bother when mirage is running hard. But if one is comfortable with mirage, it can be your friend.

My favorite scope is an aged Weaver tactical 4.5-14. Great for all light conditions and as far as a 338 RUM will shoot even on 4.5 power.

Based solely on magnification range, go with the 6-24.

There is very little difference between 4x and 6x, so that nullifies discussion of the lower magnification range. Whereas there is a big difference between 16x and 24x on the higher end. As a result, the 6-24 would be more versitile.

My rig is a Rem 700 chambered in 7mm RM with a 26in barrel mounted in a Knoxx Axiom Ultra Light stock.

I cant afford a Nightforce or four digit scope. My most exspensive consideration is a Vortex Viper PST in one of the above magnifications.

Im an Army guy with 20plus years. I can shoot well. I want the gun to be 1000 yard capable. Most hunting shots will be between 500 and up for the sport of long rang hunting of course.

Please make all the recommendations you would like. Im thick skinned. zwhat scope bramd at what power for under a grand. EXIT PUPIL plays a huge role at high power. This is why I lean toward the 4-16X50.

If I win the lotttery a 30-378 Whetheby Mag with a Nightforce scope will put the above rifle in the closet...lol

Great scope for under $1k...easy. Look at Sightron SIII

They have great glass, their turrets are crisp and adjustments are reliable and repeatable.

Sounds like you will have a great setup no matter which scope you pick. For under a $1000, I would recommend either a Vortex PST or Sightron SIII and pick the reticle that suits you best (MOA vs. mil). For magnification, 6-24 or similar will serve you well if most of your shooting is 500+. Trebark's point regarding 4x vs. 6x is dead on, especially given the distances you're shooting.

I also forgot to add that Im looking for a scope in the First Focal Plane unless someone knows a a really good scope in the SFP.

I think the 6-24 PST would make a great choice for what you're describing. I like mine quite a bit better than the 4-16's I had.

However, if you do much close stuff, the 6-24 may not be the best choice. While on paper 6X isn't bad and it has a decent FOV, the 6-24 is much less friendly to use on 6X than the 4-16 is on 4-6X. If you need something with a better bottom end, my own personal choice in that price range right now would be the Weaver 3-15 EMDR.

But for primarily 500-1000 yds, I don't think you can beat the PST 6-24 if you want FFP.
