Am I jealous! Girlfriend plunked down a ten dollar bill on a VFW raffle for a new rifle. She wins!! She gets an AR15 style rifle from Olympic Arms in .223. Has the extended flat top (about 3/4" higher than a regular one). The barrel is a heavy stainless 1:10 twist barrel with "J&T 10" stamped on it. Has an 11 degree target ground and is very heavy for an AR. The buffer spring is also very heavy for an AR style rifle. Rifle came with a Simmons scope mounted on it, and has another mounting block out on the barrel. The forend is round metal that does not touch the barrel. The thing must weigh 2.5lb. more than my Bushmaster HBar.

Anybody here ever own one? Or at least shoot one? On the website they show a $900 and a $1300 dollar one. How do you tell them apart?

HUH? What are you asking and why?

I was simply asking if anybody had shot one, and discribed what she had. No more no less. I shoot a Bushmaster Hbar and it's a little different. I didn't realize I'd get my head bit off with the inquirey, and perhaps should have asked in a better place

no one is upset its just not clear if your asking a question or not? The write up just dosent make any sence is all.

Jon

I did it to make it clear what she has. Their website is somewhat confusing, and her rifle is still slightly different than the photos. This is not a typical AR15, and she just wanted answers.

Olympic Arms is THE WORST mainstream AR15 gun you can get. The problems with those guns runs the gambit.

I can email you my collection of OLY horror stories if you want a laugh. I literally would NOT take an OLY for free.

Who told you this? I'd be curious to see if the horror stories are personal accounts, or whether they are all hearsay. Most of the Oly bashing is all he said she said crap from generations past.

I've been around a while and seen quite few Oly's operate. From personal experience, I can honestly state that not a single one has had the problems that are commonly rumored around the internet, in fact, quite the opposite. I've seen several of their least expensive rifles make guys shooting much higher priced AR's look like fools.

Their broach cut ultramatch barrels are of extreme quality for the price, and their buttoned barrels are no slouch either. I'm not saying they are the nicest, best machined AR's out there, but the OP's Oly could very well be the most accurate AR he will ever shoot.

It's like comparing the basic Savage bolt rifle to a Kimber bolt rifle. The Savage might not look the prettiest, but the on target results tell the real story.

I'm not really sure what you've got. It actually sounds like a mix & match or kit gun of some sort. To me it looks like a build based on an Oly lower. The barrel is from J&T distributing. The extended flat top sounds like one offered by Rock River a while back. I'm not even sure if they are still offered. Please post some pics of all the markings and the rilfle so we can see what it looks like.

I have to agree with what he said they are CRAP with a capital C. I had one the lower would not fit any other upper and the hole for the buffer tube was drilled at an upward angle. Any one who knows anything about ARs knows they are the worst "HOBBY GUN" you can buy hand down! But she won it so what ever I would not take it for free.

I borrowed the rifle about a week ago, and mounted a cheapo BSA 6x-24x scope on the rail with Burris rings. Had it zeroed in in ten shots (my standard 1.5" high at 100 yards) The rifle is shooting consistent sixes with hand loads built for my 700VS (26.6 grains of BLC2 under a Hornaday 55 grain Vmax in Winchester cases). I shot close to a hundred rounds thru it without a malfunction, and cleaned the barrel after five shots forthe first thirty rounds. The barrel cleans very easilly, but think the crown needs to be lapped one more time. I think with a flat bottomed forend (it came with the metal round one), and some better load development this gun could be a solid half inch gun out of the box. It seems to shoot better than my Bushmaster HBAR, but to be fair the Bushmaster has never had any load work done with it either.

The onlything I ever had to do with an Olympic fire arm was with their High Standard clones several years ago, and they truely didn't shoot well.
