How far: 7mm SAUM

How far would you feel comfortable shooting big game with a 7mm SAUM? I'm thinking in the 168-180g bullet range. Muzzle velocity of 2,950, Energy of 3,416 (with 180 Bergers).

According to the calculator it's still 1,821 fps at 2,000 yds and has 1,325 ft-lbs.

I'm not saying I would even attempt that long of a shot, but I'm messing with this Iphone app iSnipe and that's what it's saying.

I guess if I got good enough I could attempt 1,000 yards pretty easy, as far as an ethical kill??'

What is your elevation you will be hunting? What was the temperature and air density in your calculation? Just curious. With those numbers 1500yds would be a good limit. That velocity seems a little high. I could be wrong though.

According to JBM you'd have to be at about 30,000 ft elevation to get that velocity at 2,000 yds, way above 15,000 ft at least. So that's more like a 1,000 yd velocity.

There was a guy posted recently that killed an elk at about 1,300 yds with the 175 SMK launched a little faster from a 7mm WSM. If you are as good and lucky as him I guess that's not too far. I'm not that good.

Yep, something is way off with this calculation.

Typically the 7mm SAM is about neck and neck velocity/energy wise with the 7mm Rem Mag.

Ok I calibrated the "daily variables" as follows:

Wind Velocity: 8.5004 mph
Wind Angle: 178.9 deg
Altitude: 1,820.86 ft
Temp: 16.3 C
Pressure: 30.0704
Humidity: 51.2%

This is all calculated with the app according to my location.

Here's my load input:

Berger 180G Hybrid
BC of .674
2900 FPS at the muzzle

2834 fps and 3211 flb at 100 yds
2284 fps and 2085 flb at 1000 yds
1747 fps and 1219 flb at 2000 yds

I'm not trying to disprove you guys, cause I think it's bs too! Let me try this same formula in another app...

Check your calculator inputs and run it again.

IF you could push the 180 at 2900 FPS, hornady's calculator shows :

Muzzle 2900, 100-2758, 2000-2621, 300-2488, 400-2359, 500-2233, 600-2112, 700-1994, 800-1880, 900-1771, 1000-1666fps.

Energy at 1,000yds is 1,110 so roughly 1,100yds would be your limit using the 1000lbs energy on impact rule.

More realisitically you can push the 168gr at 2,900fps and you're down to 1,578fps/953ft-lbs at 1,000yds so you're breaking the 1,000ft-lbs energy line at around 950-975yds.

Wildrose, we're pretty close on my calculations and yours. Really close at first and about 80fps off when we get to 1000yds.

I've read of quite a few guys getting 2900+ in a short action, but that's "read" not my actual field experience. I have a 33" barrel blank. May finish it at 28-30 just to see what it can do?? I think this round it about perfect for a short action...I had another awhile back that I loved to shoot, but it was a factory rifle and I wanted something a little more custom...can't wait to get to shooting.

Well it's going to burn barrels faster than the .300wsm or 7mm Rem Mag, or 7wsm but it'll be fun while it lasts HA!

Stick to the 162-170gr bullet range and you can get more speed/flatter trajectories without having to go to estreme pressures and get more life out of it though.

I used to always go for extremes but I was more willing to spend money on it in those days. Back off of the extremes a bit and things last far longer without really any noticible decline in performance. Dead is dead, and a deer doesn't care whether the bullet left the muzzle at 2,800 or 2,950, or whether he was hit with a 162 vs 180gr round.

If you can put it where it needs to be neither will an elk or big hog.

I think your numbers are high.

The listed maximum velocities for the 168 grain bullets are; Saum= 2900 , WSM=2900 , Rem Mag
=2900 , STW= 3000 and just over 3200 for the 7 RUM.

I recomend 1500 ft/lbs for Elk size game and 1000 ft/lbs for dear size game. so where your bullet
drops to those energy's is the limit as long as the accuracy is there.

if you want to use a 33'' blank you will end up with around 32.6'' finished I would recomend the
7 RUM if you cut it back to 26" or 28" the Saum will be OK and be at optimum length for a short
mag In my opinion.

I'm also shooting the 180 Hybrid out of my custom 7 SAUM. According to Exbal, my bullets are traveling 3059fps out of my 28" Brux barrel. This was determined by shooting out to 800 yds and pluging in the drop info. I'm using 62 gr of 4831sc, it's above max according to the book but it barely leaves an ejector mark on the brass with no hard bolt lift. It's not max in my rifle. I doubt they are going that fast, but with a 300 yd zero my adjustment is 12.5 MOA to reach 800 yds. In perfect conditions, I would feel confident in taking a deer at around 1000 yds with this combo. I took antelope at 599 yds and 544 yds this year with devistating effects.

After looking at those numbers... I want a bullet with a G7 of .674! Probably have to be a .338 400grn vld shot out of a 1-7 twist. hehe
