Xtreme receiver for 408 CT-based rifles

Extreme Rifles are only about 20min from my house. My brother-in-law and his family own one of their 338 Extremes. He tagged a mule deer buck at 1400yds with it last year. It was set up using their 252 grain lathe turned hunting bullet. The 338 Extreme cartridge is based off the .408 Cheytac case. They are killers. I have yet to see that rifle, but I know they own one. His brother has close ties to Extreme because he owns a machining company also. I would give'em a try. My in-laws seem to be rather impressed so far.

Based solely on what I read on their web site, I think you would be ahead to get an APS in 338 Allen Mag. It shoots a 300 grain bullet the same velocity as the xtreme shoots the 266 grain. Lathe turned bullets would not be the best for hunting in my opinion. Nice looking sticks though. Just my thoughts..................

FYI, APS does not produce a repeater action or any other action for the CT case. So they are not an option.

The practical options appear to be Lawton, Stiller, and Xtreme. Snowy Mountain has such an action but no bottom metal or mags to go with it. I spoke with them yesterday.

LTLR took used the 225grn in his 338SIN on caribou. Haven't found the write up yet, but what little I read in one of his posts, he is sold on the bullet. He said they performed really well even at extended range. Like I said, my brother-in-law popped a muley buck in his bed at 1400yds and it didn't get up. Permanent nap. That was with the 338 Extreme in the 252 bullet.

Buy yourself a Stiller Tac 408 repeater and have Kirby build it with Chey Tac bottom mags. If Kirby does not have them call Burce Baer and get one from him and send it to Kirby for the build, that is another option. His 338 AM appears to be superior to the cartridge in question and his work is second to none.

Im not saying those guys are not good also but there is no question with APS.

I'm not sure what altitude these numbers were figured at. At 1760yd, 3500' ele, my 338LM and a 300gr Berger OTM, I'm at 1524fps with 1547ft/lbs. The number they list for 2kyds is also beatable with a 338LM with 300gr bergers; 15fps more MV and 200 ft/lb better than the Xtreme. If I was in the market for a hot-rod 338 I would definitely give Kirby a call. If I bought a 338 in that class, I would want better numbers than Xtreme is putting up.

In 2008 I had the opportunity to test the .338 Xtreme.
Rifle and ammo, 266 gr BT bullets, provided by him.
Shooting was conducted at 1,680 yards on paper.
Needless to say, I was less than impressed with the accuracy of the combination!

If I remember right Joel, after about 10-15 shots we had about 8-10 foot of vertical dispersion and just put it up.

Go with the Stiller 408, Bruce Baer mag box (IMO save $400 and go Single Shot). You are not going to war with it so mag box is just not needed unless money is not an issue.

Joel and Bruce to build it for sure. Second to no one and all the 338-408s are running close to the same. Some even do it without locking up the bolts at 10 grains less than the recommended max load too. Right Joel.
