7mm Rem Mag build

Hey guys, I'm pretty new here but I've been lurking on and off for a while.

Ok this is what I have. Winchester model 70 in 7mm rem mag, 26" barrel, BOSS, cheap scope, wood stock.

What I'm wondering if I wanted to turn this into a good 800yd rifle, where do I start. I've been shooting Hornaday factory 139gr exclusivley and I'd like to stay with the 139's if possible, even if I have to start reloading.

BTW, I already have a 425yd kill with it bone stock.

Should I replace the stock?
If not pillar bed?

I've been looking at a few. I'm not going to start this build until after my late rifle bull hunt in unit 10 AZ. I've looked at everything from Huskemaw to Nikon to Sniper. Money is going to be a bit of an issue till after the new year.

Do you think I have a good action/barrel to start off with?

Where should I look for a good stock?

I have 3 GreybullPrecision.com Leupold scopes and like them. McMillian or Manners are good stocks. Your action and Caliber are good as most and better than some. Just my opinion. Lots of others may not agree.

Thanks for the help. I may have it re-barreled in a few years depending on how I like it once this build is done.


Eden Wyoming huh? I moved back to AZ from Lander a year ago. I was up there for 2 years, worked for Fremont Motors. I miss the country but I gotta say I don't miss the small town a whole lot. Big adjustment for a Phoenix boy.

I'm bumping this to say I'm also using close to your set up. Winchester M70 in 7mm Rem Mag. Mine is a "Black Shadow". It is a pre Stealth synthetic stocked gun. I bought it new in 2000 from Walmart for $442. I'm setting up to shoot to 500 yards with Hornady 162s and some Win Supreme factory ammo.

I put a brake on my 26" like yours. My shoulder thanks me for it.

It was a synthetic stocked gun but was very uncomfortable. So I found a wood stock that is lighter than the synthetic and fits me like a glove. I'm having a guy float the barrel and bed the action. The stock cost me $150, another $100 to jig the action and finish sand, and I'm not sure what my buddy will charge me to finish it (it shouldn't be much).

I did pick up a Leupold VX-3 3-9x40 CDS that I'm putting in the Leupold dovetail rings. I also have a Sightron SII 4-16x42 MD if it looks like I need a little more power.

The best mod to the gun so far is the table top trigger job. It was very easy to do with a gun smithing guide. It was a heavy from the factory. My guess on it was 6 lbs with a bit of take up. Now it brakes predictably like a glass rod with no creep at 2 lbs. This is what shrunk my groups the most so far.

Guns not done yet, but I'm not going to rebarrel for a while. Until my skills have caught up with the gun, and my wallet catches up with my want list.
