I have 2 friends one with a rem 700 cdl in a 25-06 and another with a rem 700 sps 300wsm. both are having case problems. the 25-06 bulges on one side if it was a belted case the bulge would be just before the belt. he wants me to reload for him but i dont know if i should or not i just started reloading and have done around a thousand 308s for my m1a and win m100 reloaded prob 500 45lc and 45acp. i have not had any problems out of my hotter cases like this do you think he has a prob in his chamber? how would u find out? and the 300wsm it cracks either the bottle neck or the end of the casing where u crimp the bullet in (almost every shot). i know i cant reload these but what could this be? bad brass? bad chamber? i have shot both a couple times myself and i dont notice anything wrong as far as accuracy goes i havent shot these at but 200 yards but they shoot good to me.

Both rifles sound like they have loose chambers.

The bulge in front of the belt means that the chamber is larger than the loaded round (Factory ammo
is sized small so it will fit in any chamber, But if the bulge is excessive the chamber is loose.

The other rifle that splits the necks may have an excessive neck diameter or the brass is to hard.
Tell him to try another brand of ammo if this is all new ammo.

it is all new ammo the boy with the 300wsm shoots nothing but win supreme silver tips 180gr i think and the 25-06 prob has had one box throug it i think they were fed. i hear alot of ppl say that rem brass is softer do you think it would work better without cracking in he 300? also on the 25-06 should i FL resize and reload or not reload at all? also if the case keeps doing this on the 25-06 do you think rem would stand behind it in anyway?

I have good luck with Remington and the brass needs to be soft to a point to prevent it from spliting.

As far as Remington making It good , I don't think so. Normally I set the shoulder back and re chamber
and head space in order to fix the factory chambers.

There are lots of brands for the 2506 but not many for the 300 wsm.

If they don't reload tell them not to worry (It's not dangerous just annoying).

One more reason to build a custom rifle.

Seems like Remington are getting sloppier and sloppier in their factory rifles.

Sounds like the 25-06 has a bad chamber since the bulge is on "one side" of the case and the 300 WSM has excessive neck clearance. If the bulge all the way around the case equally then it would just be a large chamber but since it is on one side then the chamber is reamed wrong. The neck will split if it has to expand too much before it hits the chamber wall.

JMO but some pics or measurements would help verify it. Pics of the 25-06 bulge and measurement of the OD of the neck on a fired/unsized case and the OD of the neck on a loaded round.

As mentioned remingtons quality controll has went to ****, I traded a buddy of mine a Jewell trigger for his 243 SPS buckmaster with less than 50 rounds because the chamber has a bur in it at the neck/shoulder junction, it is on its way to becoming an 8 twist 6xc custom. This has been happening more and more in the last few years, they need to get it together because their name isn't going to keep them afloat forever.

Not defending Remington but all of the factory rifles have this problem because of the market
cost of trying to compete with each other. Quality always suffers and it is a crap shoot as to
whether or not you will get a good one.

I work on all brands and find problems with all of them because of production cost and competition
and expect to find some issues even though they are not major.

Sometime you will get a good shooting one but it will by no means be perfect.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR !!!!

have you ordered your reamer yet? If not there's a couple better ways to get the same basic thing. I shoot the 6/250AI, and like it very well. Still it could be better.

It's actually pretty easy to embed a burr in the shoulder if you get into a hurry. Bad coolant or low coolant pressures will also cause you grief. Rarely is it the reamer itself, but usually the operator. I think it's time for all gun manufacturers to step upto the modern world and buy state of the art reamers from somebody that really knows how to make them. A typical Mapol reamer would ream a .223 bore to about +/-.0001" with a finish that looks like it was ground. I might add that you could probably ream 250 bores without ever touching the cutting surfaces with a grinding wheel.

Not wanting to contradict others on here, but the case bulge being on one side, or more pronounced on one side over the other, is common on factory rifles with a plunger type ejector. If the chamber is slightly oversize, the ejector pushes the case to one side causing the bulge to be more pronounced on one side.
This will most likely have little effect on hunting accuracy.

Normal partial full length sizing (PFL) may fix this, just bump the shoulders back .002" from where they are now. Chamber and see how it turns out.
If they don't chamber easily you may have to FL size them, but don't 'cam over', just screw the die in until it makes firm contact with the press ram at it's upper most point.
I come across this regularly in Remington rifles. The ejector springs are far too hard/stiff, I commonly swap them out for something a little less aggressive.

Is the WSM brass nickel plated?
If it is, I have never had good results with nickel brass and no longer use it in anything, and it's probably not the best brass for handloading anyway.

the brass for the 300 is nickel plated i told him thats what i thought it was but hes too stubbern to try somethin diff

shaumee,

One other thing you mentioned in your original post, but hasn't been touched on by any of the responses yet; reloading for your buddies. You mentioned being new to the game and having loaded a thousand rounds or so in the M1A, and a couple hundred for other guns, and that's a good start. But reloading for others (even your buddies) is getting into a potentially very ugly kettle of fish. Personally, I'd say no. Not only no, but no way in hell. For the past 20+ years, I loaded an average of 400 to 600 rounds a day, normally six days a week. And with that, I adamantly refuse to load ammo for other people. I also decline shooting other people's handloads, with the exception of a very small circle of friends whom I know to be very conscientious handloaders who know their stuff. Not picking on anyone's abilities here, but just saying, there's a hell of a lot of liability that goes into this business, and a lot of variables that you have no control over. To me, that spells "stay clear" in very plain language. Just a word to the wise.

Ahhhhh Kevin speaks very wisely here please pay close attention. Also FWIW, I will never shoot ammunition loaded by someone else.
