i have about 11 security cameras set up at my home, shop, garage, and outside. and i can view them thru the internet either from a computer or phone

well this is what i did. i went to visit my parents in Upper Peninsula Mi a bout 2 months ago. there retired and have been up there all summer. I was on my phone looking at my house and my dad was wondering what I was doing. I told him looking at my sump pump, i have had flooding issues in the past. he was amazed.

A few hours later he asked me if i could build a system for him. He didnt want a normal system he wanted a system that was portable, wireless, and there was no power. i had to ask why and what for.

he explained to me that he has gotten into shooting at the range and he shoots at 600 yard targets. even with a very good spotting scope you cant see where you hit at 600 yards. if you zoom in too much you magnify the heat waves if you zoom out you cant see the holes.

so i took the next 3 weeks to come up with a design. its fairly simple and not expensive. after 3 weeks of testing and tweeking i did it and i tested a ip camera at 1000 yards. with no power source avalable and no eithernet cables all wireless.

last weekend we took it up there and tried it in the real world. and it worked great!!!

here is screen shots of a camera 600 yards away from the shooter and 4 feet away from the target.

Fill us in on what and how you did this.

I need one to set up by my house to watch deer on the far end of my shelterbelt.

Any Insight for me?

Thanks!

i can give you a brief summary then i have to go get ready for a concert toby keith.

i havent done much shooting since the service and being from illinois they take the enjoyment out of everything.

i am electrician but i hobby in computers security and surveillance.

i was thinking of setting up one of these too sell
Hey dude, I'm all over that!!!

I'm figgerin' w/a couple of beef stew antenna it'll be good for well beyond 600.

I'm willing to support those on this forum who are innovators of great ideas.

It's either purchase one from you or do it myself, which ever is less expensive. At this point in the ol' life, there is more money than time.

I'll be getting serious next spring.

Think about it, ok?

Also, except for the lower shot the shooting is exceptional. I'm thinking cheek weld on that one.:)

We were just discussing the feasibility of this type of system on Thursday when shooting at 300 and 400 yards. I'd be interested in this type of system if you either set it up and sell or even give us a component list so we can do it ourselves.

i dont think you need beef stew antenna the range on this in line of site is 30k from what they tell me

let me know i would love to put another system together it was a lot of fun for me

hope you got it

i would hope to find a range someplase and set the full range up with a few cameras.

everyone can bring there own laptop and sign in and pull up there shots as they please

Geese fella, so much for intellectual property! How you gonna make any money giving away your talent to the cheap skates around this forum.:D

Now your forced to take this to another level! That would be adding sound and timing capability. (This is where, in the nature of fair trade:rolleyes:, I give away my idea)

Ok, so now you can see your shot placement. Lets take it up a notch.

Place a piezoelectric contact microphone or some such thing to the target and transmit that back to the 'puter or whatever.

Place another within a couple of inches of the muzzle.

Rig in a gps that provides time stamps in microseconds (milli seconds are way too long unless your shooting thousands of yards:rolleyes:) Found this hard to come by and still be in the cheap skate LRH budget.:))

Figger the best way to time the two sound pulses to accurately measure the same point on both pulses. Whoo Hooo time of flight. Plus a little math and Waa Laa "BC". Whoo Hooo!

Do your several setups at several distances and you have a world class shooting lab that Mr. Litz (and me) would drool over. Think of the barrel wear that would be saved.

I did a proof of idea set up with my LEGO Mindstorms. Works! But millisecond resolution doesn't cut it. The Arduino will do it.

With your super hooty super long range network capability, you'd be in the berries...

I'm betting Broz would jump all over that:D

Sell the code through some kind of web store (iTunes) for under 20 bucks.

With your current business model, of giving away the parts list and having the option to purchase already built + some income for software, who knows, you may strike a vein as Len did.:)

As an inmate said to his buddy making the long walk to the "chair"; "more power to ya!"

BTW, I think you have the best thing going, out there!

Also I appreciate the detail of your setup instructions. Heck, bigngreen could even follow those steps (If he would just read 'em:D)

sorry for being stupid and explain to me why is time of flight important? ya did get me thinking i can do that too - i would have to do a little digging but that shouldn't be too hard.

as far as giving info out i dont mind helping people out and there will be some that would like a system all ready set up. i am also one step a head of ya. i am looking to build a cheap system under $100 that would be better and smaller than what i all ready did.

You're doing good. Very good in fact.

You're ahead of me in hardware assembly but not in the idea.....:D:D

Time of flight = Ballistic Coefficient. Determining an accurate ballistic coefficient is the holy grail of long range shooting.

Personally I'd put time of flight ahead of MV on any priority list of mine.

There are systems out there that "hear" the impact from the shooting point, calculate speed of sound based on atmos conditions, then determine time of flight for bc determination. Too many variables/calcs for my liking.

Keep It Simple Stupid is a good mantra.

3 one hundred buck units at 300, 800 and 1200 would be a darn good start to a DIY shooting laboratory, I'd think.

I remember well the day, and it was all day, that I shot two shots @ 200, 400, 600, 850, 1000, moving the target holder after each two shots. Seems like I walked 50 miles that day. Slept really well that night......

A 'nother next step would be to place the units at the distances detecting bullet passage over each and impact at the longest distance. A bc could then be calculated for each distance segment. Way cool.

Speed of sound would be necessary for the distance between bullet path and detector location. My brain is way turned on on this thing.

Keep 'er goin' Keep it simple and light as we LRH shooters usually don't shoot from covered firing lines. An example, one of my more popular LR practice spots is a 2 1/2 hour hike from the shooting spot to the 1180 target. Gee I hate that.....:D
