25-06 varmit gun

I was just wondering if anyone had delt with the savage 111 Long Range Hunter in 25-06. Im looking to get one... I have some berger vld's and brass and dies. But i also know that these vlds seem to be kinda picky in a 25-06. I will be useing the rifle for ground hog, pd, coyote, and maybe if i get the chance deer antlope... Im also kinda wondering if i would just be better off getting it in 7mm mag, 300 win mag,6.5x284. Just let me know what u think

I can't specifically comment on the Savage LRH in 25-06 caliber but I can comment on the 25-06 and the Savage LRH. First the 25-06 is pretty versatile. I have taken more game with this caliber from Antelope, Couse, Exotics to Mulies. One Couse at 545 yards. My go to load and still most accurate has been the 100 grn Nosler BT traveling at 3,530 (28 inch Shilen tube) hot but effective. As the throat has started to wear I just switched to Beger Hunting 115 grains still experimenting off the lands but grouping into .70 at 3,180 fps first couple of loads (not picky). The 25-06 is very versatile and effective! you can download the lighter bullets for varmints but I have had a hard time beating the 100 grn BT. As for the Savage great rifle and in 300 WM very accurate! I don't think you can go wrong with this combination for reasonable range shots on medium game and its a hell of a lot of fun to shoot.

For a rifle for what you listed you wanted to hunt the 25-06 is perfect. As has been said if you want just a one bullet one load do it all go with the 100 gr Nosler ballistic tip 52 grs IMR 4350 is hard to beat. If your ranges get really out there and the wind seems to get strong then go with the 115 Nosler Ballistic Tip and 52 grs H4831.

Try the 80gr TTSX. I was able to work up to ~3700 fps with h4831sc+CCI BR2+Norma brass+Win M70. You can hold hair on coyotes out to 400+ yds.

I guess maybe I should let you know a little more what im looking for. I already have a full cutom 22-250ai and 22-250 that works great for 400 yards and then some. I would like a gun that the next time i go out pd hunting or that skitish ground hog 600 yards out. I had one 25-06 it was a ruger haweye but the best i could ever get it to group was about a 1 1/4 with berger vlds or 85 grain nolsers. I was using retumbo and cci br2 primers and i tried winlr primers. also one more question to thow out there I normaly run nikon monark scopes 4-16 or 5-20. Would it be a huge benifit to get a better scope at the 600-700 yard range? if so what should I look for?

Monarch is a good scope. For tiny targets at long range, better glass will likely benefit you in clarity, contrast, definition... I personally feel the high end Leupolds are better glass than Nikon, then there's Nightforce and others where the price tags climb rapidly. Have a look at the optics forum.

The other thing I don't care for with my Nikons is that the cross hairs are rather thick compared to other scopes. That's fine for big game. But, I don't like it for precision shooting.

The better caliber for long range varmint hunting would be something in a 6mm as evidenced by the amount of varmint bullets built for this caliber plus the high BC's that help you buck the wind at distance. I effectively take PD's out to 550 yards with my .223 AI and 50gr BK's over 28.2grs of XBR. I also use a 6-06 for PD's with 70gr Noslers over 59grs of H4350 @ 3700+. My 6-06 is too much for a dedicated PD rifle and would move towards a 6XC then the smaller brothers like the 6RB, 6x47, 6PPC & 6Dasher for a PD rifle or the 6mm Rem or .243 for factory loads.


If you're really into PD's then have a 20BR, 20XC or 20x47 built for the 55gr Bergers. Guys are taking PD's out past 1000 yards with a 20BR and that bullet combo because of its super high BC .381. Not the splat factor that you get with a BT but a lot more enjoyable to shoot because of recoil. I use a (80% of the time) 20VT in the PD fields and don't need to worry about barrel heat or recoil (see my hits every time) 32 gr's @ 3700+ with 18grs powder with a BC that rivals most HP 50 & 55gr .22's


I would also try getting one of your 22-250's to shoot the new 53gr V-max's with the BC of .290. That should make your current rifles 600 yard rigs with no problem. You will need a 1:12 or slower to make it happen. My 1:14 just wont get them to fly along with many of my partners.

ok so now you got me thinking a little. But more along the lines i dont need 2 22-250 with 26 in barrles. And i keep reading how easy it is to swap a barrel on a savage. So i have a model 12 savage in 22-250 And im liking the idea of a 243 or 243ai. Correct me if im wrong but a 243 ai should get a 95-105 grain bullet moving about 3100 or so? So thing is if i do that I would like to keep the barrel around 20-22 in. probly keep it a hevy barrel and have it fluted. So could someone point me in the right direction to get a barrel, head space gauge, and barrel wrench. Also correct me if im wrong again but i should be able to use the same bolt head?

My only other question shoud this be good for a 600 yard ground hog. I am wanting to keep around a 100 grain bullet for two reasons. one we have some big like 70lb + coyotes/coydogs. two i always enjoy the splat factor lol

and i live in ohio so i only get to shoot pd once every couple of years. So its mainly groundhogs and coyotes and i have been looking for a new calling rifle...

Shanman, I think your on the right track now with a 6mm. I use the 88gr Berger FB HIGH BC Varmint for coyotes. The jacket is thin enough that I don't get 1 hole pass throughs but thick enough that a shoulder won't stop it. I bet it would be a great chuck bullet too. 70gr Nosler BT's get the go head for PD's and deer sized game gets the 95gr VLD. Not really sure if you would need to shoot the bigger 6mm's to be effective.

Can't help you on the savage build stuff since I am not a savage guy. Any of the top barrel builders would be fine. I would go with a 24" to get the most out of the round, you defeat the purpose of the AI in a short barrel. Good Luck
