Hi,

Does anyone install custom reticles, similar to the Nightforce Velocity 1000 reticle, in Leupold illuminated scopes?

Not sure. Talk to Leupold Custom Shop, They install lots of different reticles.

I just spent 10 minutes talking to a Leupold technical specialist (after 15 minutes waiting for a chance to talk to him) & was told the only comparable reticle they offer is the Horus 27 reticle, and they do not offer that in an illuminated version.

I'm not happy!! (The words I was thinking aren't allowed here.)

Premier Reticles used to retrofit custom BDC reticles. Unfortunately, I don't think they do anymore.

Hollands ART reticle is the only one I've seen lately that is retrofit, but it isn't like the NF Velocity 1000. It's similar to the NR-R2 or NP-R1, where the spacing is equal all the way down.

The Leupold Varmint Hunter or Boone and Crocket reticles are the closest that I've seen offered from Leupold. The VH reticle will work with my 300 WSM or my 6 Long Dasher or even my 25-06 out to somewhere around 600 yds with the right zero.

Example: 300 WSM sighted dead on at 275 with main crosshair.
Next wire is 350
Next wire is 450
Next wire is 550
Bottom post is 625..........this is assuming that I can get 2950' /sec velocity with a .5 BC bullet and is based on drops from the ballistic program. I've checked the reticle against a yardstick to define the moa drop between each wire. Actual range testing is next.

Nightforce has been ahead of the game for quite a few years now when it comes to reticles. Leupold has only been playing catch up (and not getting it accomplished IMO) and they kinda got on the bandwagon of the "dial the distance" thing with the CDS knobs.

Bruce,

Thanks for the info. I've already got a VX3 3.5-10x50 with the illuminated B&C reticle & was HOPING to get one similar in 4.5-14x50 that was good to around 800 yards to mount on a .300 Weatherby. No luck with Leupold. Even their CDS turrets only go to around 600 yards.

According to the Leupold rep yesterday custom drop turrets with 2 turns are no longer offered.

I just got an email from Eurooptics telling me the velocity 1000 reticle is still 6-months out.

Since this is a cary rifle I was hoping to avoid the weight of a Nightforce.

I hear you on the weight. With an 8 or 8 1/2# rifle, I feel that the 2# scopes are just a little much. Not only adding weight, but making the rifle feel "top heavy".

Cabelas is now selling NF optics. FWIW, I saw some of the V1000 reticles offered in their shooting edition catalog...........if they're actually in stock is another question though.?

I don't know about using the reticle for 700 and 800 yds shots. I've personally only ever used a reticle out to around 600 yds. I am wondering if temp and altitude will have too much effect at 800?..........Just speculation, cant say for sure.

Out to 600 I've seen very little change due to alt or temp, unless we're shooting with a .2 BC bullet, then it even starts to effect things at 400 yds.

Good luck.

Finally got word from Nightforce today. The velocity 1000 reticle in a 3-15 NSX will ship in 6 months. That's more than a year later than Nightforce had announced.
