I have Rem 700 Classic chambered in .300 Weatherby. After pillar bedding the action, squaring the bolt face and working the trigger it still remains a 1.25 MOA gun with muliple powder, primer, bullet combinations.
The question is if it becomes an action donor what is the best choices for caliber? Can this action be used for a .338 edge or Lapua? I'm also looking at shooting economics; what is the "cheapest" magnum caliber to reload. I also have 6.5x284 to satisfy my small bore shooting addiction so I'm thinking large bore.

If you're looking to spend no more than you have to and get the most bang for your buck the 338 Edge is easily, in my opinion, the BEST choice. If shooting factory ammo is a big deal to you then go with a 338 RUM.

I say to H$ll with the big 338s, powder eating, cost more to load, and unessesary. Get it rebarreled with a good match chamber 300 wby mag or win mag.

I'll certainly agree with you to a point because I'm a huge .30cal fan. In fact if I could only have one rifle to hunt with it would be a .30cal something or other because I think they make and awesome universal rifle caliber. But, in this case the OP already has, IMO, one of the best deer calibers available with his 6.5-284 so if I already had a great 6.5 I would make the leap up to a .338 Edge based on the OP's criteria.

B23, I agree there is nothing wrong with having a big 338, his issue with the wby is not getting it to group, he should probably check the crown and use some hot powder (Imr4350) and some fed210m primers, but if I wanted to put a lapua sized case on a remington 700 id build a 338x378wby or 338lapua imp. and use a DEG bolt body that is designed for it with an M16 style pinned extrator and then it will be safe, but imo every caliber listed should have atleast a 28" barrel.

Or a .300 RUM which can handle anything with confidence out to 1000yds plus. Of course the .338wm for someone that just really wants a .338 will take care of anything with ease to at least 800yds as well.

If someone has both the desire and budget for the big .338's there's nothing wrong with them, I just see no need for one. For things like expense, recoil, wear on equipment etc the big .338's have as many disadvantages as they do advantages so there are lots of factors to consider.

Thanks for all the reply's definetely some ideas to think over. Backwoods I've tried the 4350 with Remy primers still > 1MOA. I think the inaccuracy is inherent to the gun itself and short classic barrel. Also, I just can't get myself to like the belted cartridge and freebored chamber (nothing to do with the performance of the cartridge its just personal preference so save the attacks please). I have several 30 cals and am thinking something on the bigger size.

The 338's outperform the 300's plain and simple. They deliver a bigger heavier bullet to the target with more energy. That is alot of advantage for killing big game at long range. The 300 rum burns just as much powder as the edge so that argument is out the window. The 300's are good for long range and the 338's are better..

I couldn't agree with you more but I still really like big .30cal's so to solve my delemma I had to get both. :) Already have a 338Lap Imp and have a 300 Lapua Improved being built.

Well its a boring Saturday night so I'm going to start a ****ing contest, 30-378wby 230grn berger otm at 3200 fps in 28" barrel .719 bc vs 338 edge 300grn SMK at 2850 in a 28" barrel .760 bc. Edge hits with 75ftlbs more energy, wby hits 150fps faster, and how many fairly easy to get high bc 338 cal bullets are there about 5 vs about 30 in 308 cal. So let me hear it, should be interesting.

The only thing worth ****ing about is the matchup.:D Try comparing the same case with the same bullet maker. 338-378 with the 300 Berger... You know the whole apples to apples thing.
