hello everyone im a canadian. live in manitoba and i'm getting into long range hunting/shooting. i hunt deer, moose, black bear. shot's can be from 300m to 1200m easly.

so im thinking of buying a savage 11/111 lrh in the following, 308 win (to learn the trade) 300 wsm or the 300 wm

in short what the most ideal round for my needs?

thanks every one

p.s. im getting into reloading shortly

300. Win Mag and 300. WSM are identical with 180 grain bullets or smaller. The 180 grain bullet is minimum and will work but the 190 vld or 210 vld would be better for long range purpose! Both the 300. Win mag and WSM are capable of what you are trying to do but the win mag is better for this kind of application unless the WSM is shot out of a long action. In the standard short action the, WSM case doesn't have the room to fire the 190 vld especially the 210 vld at speeds that are needed. In a long action, the 190 and 210 vld can be seated into the lands, high in the neck and take velocities of the win mag.

Rule the 308. Win out!!

It sounds like you are already hunting/shooting, and I'm just curious about the equipment/experience you're starting with.

once again thanks. i have been hunting all my life. im from ontario 200 m shot's are rather rare. but i joined the army and off west i went lol .. so i have been hunting out here for 7 years now.

im currently using a 270 win but its not the best bear round imo. my wife uncle in sackatchewan has a problem with black bears attacking his cattle. so this fall im heading down there to give him a hand gun)

The 300. Win mag or WSM is capable
Of deer at 1000+ ranges as long as the rifle is accurate enough (sub moa) and the shooter is capable. Yes the 300. Is better for bear then the old 270. Win but loaded with 140 accubond I wouldn't hesitate to take a shot at a Black bear within 500

If you already have a .270 then rule out the .308. They are basically identical. I have both and when I run the numbers for each there is not really anything one can do that the other can't duplicate. I am a real fan of the .308 and am converting my .270 to a 7mm Rem Mag.

Like the others said go with the 300 Win Mag. Longer COAL, magazine and case capacity allows for long high BC VLD bullets. If you were looking for a large game timber rifle where long shots are not needed the 300 WSM would get my vote.

thanks again . on a little diffrent note, who here has used the savage 111 lrh ? and there thoughts were on the rifle ? and also what would be another good sarting rifle would be in this feild i.e 700 sendro II for an example ...

thanks again
