OK looking at the 7mm-08. Does anyone have some first dealing with this caliber at longer distances? Also can anyone give facts on potential effective hunting range on whitetail and hogs?

Been shooitng one for years using 140BT infront of 4350. I have taken WT deer out to 236 yds and hogs up to 312yds with no issues at all. Great round very little recoil and a blast to shoot in the offseason when not hunting hogs.

thanks but with the lack of response means that i may look somewhere else. I am looking for a 600-700 yard hunting rifle.

The 7/08 is a good round for wight tail deer out to 600 yards with 162 or 168g bullets at around 2650 fps. A step up would be a 284 win in a short action with the same 162 or 168 gn bullets at 2780 fps would stretch your range to 750 yards for deer hunting

the 260 or 7-08 are better for deer the 338 fed would be more of a elk hunting rifle for under 500 yards

I have shot several deer with mine. One of them was a mule deer that field dressed 300lbs. Some of those deer were 300+ yards. I have never had any trouble with it. You can load it as high as 180 gr. for elk if you need to. Plus it doesn't beat the crap out of you so you can shoot the hell out of it. I have never regretted getting mine even with all the guys on here talking big about their very large calibers.

I have taken White tail deer beyond 600 yards with the 7/08 and hogs past 700 yards.
also several past 500 yards in my 7/08 custom pistol.

For longer shots at targets (1000 yards) I went to the 168 grain SMK.

The national High power match was won at Camp Perry several times with the 7/08.

The 7/08 is one of the best cartriges for deer I have ever seen, and has a reputation for
drop in there track kills.

It will out perform it's parent case in every way.

I like to hear things like that JE. does the barrel length play a role the 7-08?

It does a little, but the 7/08 like the 308 does not need a long barrel to perform.

My favorite 7/08 has a 22 " Lilja and my hunting load velocity with a 120 ballistic tip
is 3150 ft/sec. using Varget

Most will reach top velocities with a 24"barrel but a 26" will get a little more.

The first 7/08 I owned had a 18.5" barrel and I installed a 20" and only gained about 35 ft/sec.

The next one I built I tried a 23" barrel and saw a little more velocity but after many shots I
set the shoulder back and re-crowned the barrel to 22" and did not loose hardly anything.

So it appears that 22 to 24" is about the optimum barrel length for hunting and 26 to 28"
barrels will get all the velocity possible for target shooting.
