My sister is getting married in a month and her boy friend is a good guy just doesnt hunt or really shoot for that matter, we did talk him into putting in for an antelope tag and he drew and this week I talked him into buying a stainless 700 BDL in 300 RUM that I found a smoking deal on. hes an average sized guy so size isnt a problem, but I dont want him to develop a flinch so I am going to buy him a muzzle brake. I think I am going to get him a harrels brake. they are inexpensive and work really well. I think itll be a good all around gun for him, just wondering if anyone else is thinking I may have jumped the gun a little and maybe should have found a beginner a little smaller rifle..

This is probably a better gun for you. Let him shoot one of your smaller caliber guns and then work him up to the big boy.

Well... too late now. I am gonna load it light with 165's for antelope then once we get a brake on it ill build him an elk load.. I got carried away in the moment. its a stainless BDL (not sps) comes with rings bases and a bushnell 3200 firefly scope all for $450!! someone I know needed to buy it and I couldnt because i just bought a 300 RUM... Which will be here tomorrow btw

You get to start eariler than us We don't start gun season on Antelope till the 10th of September. You just need to run all the big ones over the mountain to the west for us to shoot.

Lol Mike, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has done that, did the same thing with a buddy of mine, 300RUM Sendero I, luckily it already had a break on it.

The 300RUM CDL I had (now currently my 338RUM) didn't recoil all that bad, but a break would be a wise idea, you might make sure the poor guy is used to the muzzle blast created by these boomers. I haven't used that particular type of break but it certainly can't hurt, let us know how it shoots.

P.S. 300RUM for Antelope?!.... must be a little bigger on that side of the Big Horns!

I probably won't be able to bring my 338RUM as i'm still fiddlin' with a good load (seems to show pressure several grains before normal). Just the good ole 6-284 & probably my Lazzeroni, shoot me an e-mail when you get some solid dates, if I'm not out of country I think i'll join in gun)

Just depends on where you hit them try to stay away from the hind quarters if you want any meat. I will be using my 7mm Wapiti with 180 gr bergers. So I am in the same boat as you.

If he only shoots infrequently,you could get the low load 300RUM from Remington. The low load is equal to a 30-06. Much easier on the shoulder.

The power level I ammo from Remington has the ballistics of a 30-06 but significantly more recoil. I got my 300RUM when i was 13 and killed a big muley in Oregon that year with no break. And I shot that muley on the run at over 300yards. No joke. Just tell him to sack up. Load it with light bullets, I was using 150gr Sciroccos. He should be fine, but I do agree that a muzzle break is a very good idea.

be very carefull! Those big overbore cases do not like to be seriously downloaded. More than one action went to the junk yard over this issue alone. There are some 3000fps loads in the AA manual using 5744. Might want to call Hogdon and see what they have in mind.
