Have a buddy that I work with that has a nice Wby Mk V in 7RemMag. It was a hand me down from his father in law, and I doubt he's even put a box of shells through it, and is wanting to sell it.

I don't know much about weatherby's, I know off the shelf the Mark V's are high, but I'm on the fence on buying it from other than adding another rifle to the collection, so I'm not going to dump alot on it.

I've shot it, shoots great, but in need of decent glass.

Its in good condition, just a simple visual looks like the barrel and throat are pretty smooth, bolt face only very light wear. The barrel is has light exterior pits 2inches and out toward the bore.

The stock on this rifle is beautiful, the main reason I'd like to have it, walnut i guess with gorgeous marbling grain. It has some dents but not enough to take away from this wood.

So he doesn't know what its worth other than selling it at a pawn shop, so wondering what he would get there and what would be good for me to offer him.
Thanks

weatherby rifles in non weatherby calibers typically arent as valuable but its hard to say, just get a blue book and rate it. with pitting though its not going to rate terribly high.

Thanks

Would 500$ be a reasonable offer on this gun, or is that high or low

And how customizable is the weatherby action if I decide to re barrel in a different round

Well interestingly enough the Mark v deluxe isnt shown in 7mm remington mag at all. So I need to know what model specifically it is. wood or synthetic? If it is a mark 5 deluxe, are you sure its a weatherby barrel on it? if it is maybe its a custom shop deal. I would call weatherby with the serial number they should be able to give you all the info we need. A Mark V Deluxe in most calibers is about $1000 in 95% up to $1500 in 100% and in bad shape worth as little as $500.

As far as customizing a weatherby, as far as I know they are great, PM Long Time Long Ranger he knows as much as anyone about weatherbys.

Thanks for the reply
Its wood
I may call weatherby and see what they can tell me
I would probably call it 90-95 percent with the exterior rust toward the end of the barrel, other than that no defects.

Well listen to this! First of all I'm ****ed, but lucky to still be alive!

Called weatherby, and this is a 7 Wby Mag. ****!! Luckily I didn't tear myself and the rifle up shooting the Rem mag ammo through it. It was ammo my buddy had been shooting through it and gave to me to try out.

Obviously I was too trusting that this was the right ammo since that is what he had shot through it, and here's what had me believing him, the barrel is Stamped "weatherby" with the wby script, THEN BELOW THAT, stamped 7mm Magnum. Not 7mm Wby Magnum, when I was getting ready to shoot it that struck me as strange, the fact that it did not say 7mm Rem Mag OR 7mm Wby mag. And I thought it was strange being a rem mag in a wby mag rifle, and the way it was stamped didn't convince me it wasn't a rem mag.

And oddly enough, it shot pretty well! After some research apparently they are pretty similar, but different slightly different neck length and shoulder angle.

And after this discovery, if I would buy this rifle I would not shoot it until I rebarreled, and this rifle apparently has repeatedly been shot (a few rounds by me, unfortunately)with ammo it was not chambered for.

The action and stock still have me interested though. It is a deluxe, according to weatherby built sometime 80-81, made in Japan.

thats scary.. ! japanese mark 5's are very desirable from what I hear. I would guess the rifle is ok if it didnt blow apart, but I would have it checked out by a quality smith... whatever you do be carefull. and I am glad you figured that out!

I have a Mark V Deluxe and the barrel is stamped "Use Only 7MM Wthby Mag" (as should be yours) and "Mark V" is stamped on the receiver right beside it. Even my Vanguards are stamped with the "Wthby only" if chambered in Wthby calibers.

One good way to see what you have is to look at the fired brass. Does it have the 7mm Rem Mag shoulder angles or the radiused Wthby shoulders? It should have fire formed to the chamber and be a dead giveaway. I received some 1x brass from someone that was supposed to be 7mm Rem Mag and some of the rounds were headstamped 7mm Wthby Mag.

Although shooting anything in a rifle it wasn't chambered for is a potential for a big "OH CRAP!", shooting the Wthby ammo in a 7mm Rem Mag would have been more of a concern to me than the 7mm RM in a Wthby chamber since according to my reloading manuals, the Wthby ammo is loaded to higher pressures than the Rem Mag.

Your friend isn't the 1st person this has happened to (or probably the last). I pickup brass from the range and you would be surprised how many times this happens. I found a handful of 30-06 rounds that someone had fired through a 35 Whelen (IIRC).....I found out when I tried to resize them and there was no way they would go in the sizing die.

FWIW, it should be noted that Weatherby does offer the Mark V Sporter (I know, not a Deluxe) in 7mm Rem Mag. Here are the specs from the site:

7mm Rem. Mag.RH 24"8 lbs.44 5/8"3+124" #21-9 1/2"13 5/8"1"1 5/8"1/2"

Again, check the 1x brass- like Mike said, it may have been rechambered (and with the price of Weatherby ammo, who'd blame them!).

Unless you are a reloader the cost of weatherby ammo is outrages. Weatherby did chamber the 7RM in a Vanguard. Dont think the Mark V was chambered for this round. The rust you speak of does it go over the end into the barrel? I will say in VG shape $700.00 to $1000.00 it must be in excellent condition to get this kind of money. One thing the rust is going to turn some people off. Barrel life for the weartherby calibers is fairly short, They are barrel burners. It's not a rifle to go to the range and shoot all day. I just saw a Weatherby FS at greybeards sight for $695.00 I believe that is what it sold for. You may want to post pictures. Good Luck Lou

Actually, the verbiage differs depending on when and where the rifle was made. His initial comment of "Weatherby" over "7mm Magnum" is one of the correct configurations.

Not true. You can get it as low as $35/box from Hornady, and in my 7mm Weatherby it is both accurate and deadly. My Dad used it last year at 500+ and 800+ yards on antelope in his rifle too.

I'd have the chamber inspected and also inspect the once-fired brass as others metion. If it all checks out then go out and enjoy that rifle! We love our 7mm Weatherbys here.

Doc, I stand corrected and apologize for any misinformation.

I had misread/misunderstood the part about the stampings. My 7mm is also an early '80s made in Japan and I just presumed that they would all be stamped the same. Now that I see the photo, I see that it is definitely different than mine.

And like you say about the ammo, there is less expensive out there. My Brother-In-Law has the same rifle as I do and he thought that it meant he could only use "Weatherby" brand ammo. He was griping about having to pay $78.00 a box for it and he refused to believe he could use Hornady or some other brand.
