6.5 rum

I'm looking at a custom 6.5 and was wondering if any of ya'll out here has necked down a 7mm RUM to 6.5...
If so any details as to loads and MV would be great.
I will most likely be running 140 Berger VLD's.

I've seen a few other 6.5 cartridges on here, but was inquiring about this one.

you have to be thinking 6.5R SAUM right? The RUM case would be massively overbore! A few guys are taking the .270 WSM case and necking it down with good results. I'd think the SAUM case would be a natural

A 6.5 RUM would be fun but barrel life may cut it down to size.

The 6.5 STW might be worth a look??

The 6.5 SAUM, 6.5 WSM, 6.5-06 imp, are great performers as welllightbulb

I was toying with the idea of the necked down 270WSM also.
I think case volume is a bit better with the WSM vs SAUM.
There seems to be a few floating around based off the 06 case too.
I've also been following the write ups about the 6.5 SIN...sounds like a sweet little shooter, if they build it.
First time hearing about Fifty driver's 6.5...If you have any additional info on this, that would be great.
I would like this next gun to be an excellent hunting gun to 600-700 yds and be able to have good 1000yd target potential, not for comp, but bragging rights with my buds.
BTW, has anybody used the CE bullets in 6.5...How do they perform compaired to AB and Berger.
As for the 6.5 RUM...i'm not really that bothered with a bit of reduced barrel life, it is the nature of the beast. So if anyone has tried this, please let me know.

My hunting passion at the moment is sheep, so i would most definatly want to make the most of an opportunity out to 700yds.
Beyond that, i would be just be printing groups...and hopefully bragging...hehehe
Yes the bergers don't look to handle the speeds i'm wanting, so i've been researching CE bullets...
I was just checking out Fiftydriver's 6.5 AM...impressive #'s.
It looks like it might be what i'm looking for.
I might hold on a bit to see if the 6.5 SIN comes along anytime soon.

Hi there GilsTheDestroyer, Im just a stones throw away in Drayton. neat to see someone on here from my neck of the woods. where do you go for sheep mostly? Nordegge area?

Anyway back to the point at hand. I would maybe opt for a different approach on the 6.5's. Usless you handload alot and are willing to spend alot of coin on your rifle and loading components, I would stay away from barrel buners in odd-ball wild cats. Its just alot more pricey up here. If you do go full custom who were you thinking of using? ATRS?

I would look into the .264WIN in a Senduro. that'll be about your fastest and cheapest route for a fast 6.5.

I have a buddy who built a 7mm rum improved necked down to 6.5 it shot ok with velocity up to 3600 ish but his barrel life was gone at 200 rounds I dont think you would get much better barrel life even if you didnt improve it, he also has a 6.5 short mag shoots it at 3275 fps, lot more efficent for only 325 fps,to low of barrel life for me but each to his own good luck.

his final load 6.5 7mm rum improved;
83.7 grains retumbo at 3500 fps

his final load 6.5 short mag;
66.5 grains 50BMG at 3275 fps

I agree with angus-5024, a sendero in .264 win mag would be an excellent choice! I built a 6.5-300 Win mag I dubbed 6.5mm Voodoo (because a .6 bc pill at 3400fps with no muzzle brake is black magic )

To add to what 270winshort said, his buddies velocities line up nicely with what I'm getting. Current load is 72.5gr Retumbo with a 140gr Berger VLD in a 1-9tw 28" bbl, velocity is 3388fps. Similar and much higher velocity could be reached with US-869, but it was too temp sensitive for me.

Your in luck. Between my dad, myself and my brothers we've got 4 6.5x300 rum between us. There all on rem la 700's with #5 shillen stainless between 26" and 27" . With the 27" you can get 3450-3500 FPS with a 140gr moly bullet and 3550 to 3600fps with the 130 gr moly swift. We've been running 87.5 gr Hodgen retumbo with the 130's. You'll get 800 or so rounds out of your first throat and 300 or less out of your second. The shillens tend to shoot better and better then they go to crap so fast you'll think the scope came lose. I'm thinking a Krieger might give a little more life. Also this round is real hard on brass. In 3 firings the primers will get real lose. If you choose to go this route let me know. I've got years of load development. It will save u a lot of barrel life. We typically shoot 1-1.5" 3 shot groups at 300 yards.

As for the 264 WM...thats what my buddy has, nice little number, but you know how it goes...i can't let him beat me without a fight...lol
He's running a 130gr AB @ 3360fps. Last time i was home, he layed 2 shots @ 650yds 1.6". Ya i know its a wee bit hot, but accurate. Thats alright though, i got him back with a 3 shot group same distance 2.5" with my ol' 06 enfield sporter P14, 150 barnes running 2950 i think?...i loaded them a long time ago.

Me and a buddy usually go up the Ram for opening week of sheep season.
I know i'm a bit late in the game, i will make this next gun for next sheep season, and just see if i can get it done with a 300RUM this year.
ATRS has some really nice rigs...wow...but they look a bit heavier than i think i want to lug up a mountainside

Sweet buddy, i think we need to xchange some #'s so i can get more particulars on your rifles, loads, brass and such...

On another note, I'm impressed with Sinners 338 SIN and LTLR's load workings. If the 6.5 SIN is anything close to that, i maybe sold.
Remember, i wish to pack this rifle sheep hunting...and not just with a mule either...hehehe

before I'd build a .264 Win mag, I'd build a 6.5x.270 mag. Better case and neck design makes it clearly better than the .264 mag.
