bergers and short range hunting

Not the same scenareo but I took a rut crazed 8pointer this past fall with the 308 cal 168 berger vld hunting bullet with my 30-06 and 56 grains of H414 at around 2800 fps. It was broadside shot at 50 yards bullet entered between rips liquidfied the lungs broke off side rip on way out and left half dollar size hole. The deer ran about 30 yards the same direction the doe he was chasing went before he collapsed. The blood trail looked liked graffitti with a spray can, if I needed it, but he died within sight of the stand, in fact I could follow the blood trail from the stand if I wanted too. The only meat lost was rib meat.

Not sure how the .284 cal bullet would fare under faster speeds, but it should only be 100+ fps faster or so. From what I have read on others experience is stay off the shoulder inside 100 yards and you will be fine.

Hope that helps,

I have shot numerous animals with the Bergers from 25 yards to 650 yards. From Velocities of 3300fps to heavy 180's at 2800. The results have been the same. All DRT. I shot a 550lb hog with a 130gr Berger at 3300fps(muzzle) at a 100 yards and it simply could not have died any quicker than it did. I have not had one fail me yet. The only pass throughs I have had were at long range. The 650yard kill was on a white tail doe with a medium sized exit hole. I could not be any happier with a hunting bullet.
