Which 308 win bullet?

I have a 308 Win that I am going to shoot out to possibly 800 yards, mostly just a good cheap flying plinking bullet that I can use on the occational deer or antelope. but mostly just steel and prairie dogs. I am leaning 168 SMK for no other reason than they are only $30 for 100 bullets and I have had good accuracy out of them with other guns. Let me know what you think.

Other good bullets that are a bit cheaper are the 168 Hornady A-max and the Nosler Custom Competition. When you through in deer hunting I would go with the Hornady A-max. The plastic tip really aids expansion.

The 168 will probably do everything you want to do inside 800.... two weights I would consider over the 168 are the 155 Scenar and the 175's, just my opinion & extremely limited experience with the 308; for some reason the 168 always shot very well but left a lot to be desired when it came to terminal performance.

Im using 178gr Amax's with outstanding results. Over rl15 getting 2750fps out of a 20 1/2" tube. Cheap, accurate, and they will stay supersonic out to 1100yards here at sea level.

I decided to give thhirnady hornady hpbt match bullet in 168 a whirl.

I am in the same boat, so let us know how the hornady's do. last night i sat there for 5 min going back and forth between the amax and the smk. the amax at cabelas were 27.99 and the smk's 32.99. i went with the smk because i shot the rifle prior to buying it (making sure it shot good) and he had factory loads that used the smk and they shot well. i also picked up some varget. this is a new to me gun, and i hoping to play around with it over the next few weeks while i am waiting for the call telling me my new edge is ready to come home!

As mentioned the 155 lapua is good or the 155 sierra MK palma they both have a BC higher than the hornady 168 bthp match and almost as high as the 178, and the 155s will haul *** over 49.5grns RE15.

150 ETips are worth looking in to. Haven't shot much game with them yet but once you get a load dialed in they have been real good out of my .308

Varget and 4064 are good for heavy bullets, but will be tightly compressed with 168s, H4895, RE15, and. Win 748 work better for the 155-168 grainers, re15 will likely give you the highest velocity with all bullets 155 and heavier.

Agree with this 100%. I'm using Varget to push my Berger 185 gr. bullets in my .308 Win. I'm more than pleased with this combo....... accuracy and speed is excellent with zero signs of pressure.

I'm thinking RE-15 would be a great choice for lighter bullets.

Any other suggestions for the lighter bullets in .308? I've been using Varget with the long 150 grain ETips and have wondered if a faster powder with slightly less ase capacity might be better. I am right at a compressed load.
