105g hunting vld's 6mm

Anyone have any practical experience with the 105 bergers on whitetails and shoulder shots?

So specifically anyone got any pics and/or first hand accounts on the performance of the 105's hitting front shoulder bone on whitetails? At the 200 to 400 yard range.

Some of these deer up here in the foothills of northern arkansas are pretty **** tough, plus its quite steep with bluffs and very loose rock on the mountains and I want to anchor them with authority.

On a side note someone I hunt with is a firm believer in the 270WBY and using partitions for putting the authorative DRT smackdown on the deer around here, and he is very leery of me using my .243 to deer hunt with, I want to prove that it can smoke em and smoke em hard.

I could use the 300wm but I dont want to I want to show him that they will slap the dirt without using a magnum. If they run 50 yards we have to take a trip down into the rough stuff and it takes a loooong time to get em outta there and they might tumble a long ways down.

Normal shot on our farm is between 300 and 400 yards really nothing closer than 200 ever. Using a vanilla .243 if it is pertinent to your response.

Anyone with first had knowledge of the 105g 6mm hunting vld's specifically? Will they penetrate whitetail shoulders at 2 to 400 yards and pass through.

Want to give bergers a try and I have read that people get amazing results from the 140g 6.5's and larger bullets but my searching has turned up nothing for the 6mm 105's other than vague "it killed the deer". Which you can find for pretty much every bullet ever made

With no accubond avail in the 6mm I reckon I will go with 100g partitions unless someone has some knowledge of the 6mm bergers.

Wonder if swift or someone else makes a bonded bullet in the 6mm class....*off to check*.

What is the twist of your barrel ? make sure it will stabalize the heavier bullet?

They are devastating on deer, a co-worker punched three whitetail does a nice buck a couple antelope and a 300 class bull elk with his 243 two years ago and the only one bullet did not go clean through and that was the bull but it was under the hide on the off shoulder after going through both shoulders and spine and he hit the ground so hard it broke his jaw. A couple of the does he shot at extreme angles and they both exited in a baseball size hole. looked like a buzz saw went though them! The 105 Berger is impressive out of the 243 IMO, shot placement is still top priority, the only way to find out is to drill one gun)

1 in 9.25 according to savage is my RoT, I believe they call for a 1 in 9 for their 105's.

Thanks for the info guys, based upon this im going to get some and see if i can make em shoot in my poor old factory model 10.

I really really wanna show that the good ole 243 with the proper bullet selection is all a person needs. gun)

My eyes musta gotten crosseyed and read the rot for a lighter bullet, may have to drop down some. Yep 1 in 9 was for the 95's my mistake. Thanks for the spot!

I shoot a 6mm-06 with a 26in lilja 1-8 twist barrel. i shoot the 105gr hunting VLDs at around 3250fps which is max u can push them befor u have jacket failure. i tried the 115gr but just couldnt get them to group well. I shot an antelope at 600yrds this year and let me tell you it was not pretty at all major damage. i shot another at 300yds and dropped it too. i also shot muley under 100yds and it made hamburger out of the front shoulder. ok back to the topic my older brother shoots a 243ai factory rechambered remington 700 barrel. and is having very good luck with 105gr vlds and slow burning powders not sure on the exact one but i think it was H1000 or something like that i would think 4831SC would do well too. but his factory 1-9.5 i think is stablizing them fine. could just be becuase its an AI but give them a try you wont be let down on there performance if u can get them to group well.

It wont hurt trying the 105's a box is probably only $45.00 if they shoot use them if they aren't grouping it could be the twist is to slow

My co worker shoots a 1-10 twist Howa and has no problems, we're at about 6000ft elevation though, I would give them a try anyway!

I don't understand how you can describe this kind of results then say "you won't be let down on their performance".

Results like those would keep me from giving them any consideration.

Seeing as the twist rate will probably be an issue on the VLD's, I'd be inclined to look at the Swift Scirocco II 90gr ... It has the highest BC of any of the better hunting bullets out there in 243, and it's construction will handle the higher impact velocity from the extra 200-300 fps you'll get at the muzzle over the 105's.

For what its worth: 243AI 100NP @3125fps -Pronghorn, mullies, whitetail, Elk.

243AI 95NP @ 3300fps -Pronghorn, Whitetails, Alligator(~800lbs), 1/2" steel plate(clean through)

I'm going to see what the 95VLDs do in this gun.
