Over the years I have made a gazillion trips to the western states. I was introduced to the Rocky Mountains while at Army Reserve summer camp just outside Denver, Colorado. My wife flew out to join me for the weekend and we drove up to the top of Mount Evans. After that trip I was hooked forever.

In subsequent years we hit every single western state, some many times. The one that always seems to be at the top of our list, though, is Wyoming. Our growing family stayed in the Jackson, Wyoming area during many summers rafting rivers, riding horses and watching rodeos, In winters we returned to ski down mountains and to snow-cat through frigid Yellowstone.

Len, Great article. It is giving me Wyoming fever sitting here reading it. We had a summer home up on Black Butte a few miles outside of Pinedale, WY a few years back. I spent a lot of time hiking the Wind Rivers and fishing the Green and New Fork rivers....... absolutely awesome country!!!! Other than a couple of drive throughs I have never spent any time in the Big Horns. Your article has my mind turning with thoughts of loading up the wife, kids and camper and heading out there this summer!!!!

Len---You are right on the button about the BigHorns! I've hunted the West side of the Mountains since 1994 and can't wait to get back there every year. My Wyoming buddy was just transferred from Gillette to Sheridan last November and I'm looking forward to taking some extra time this Fall to do some exploring on the Region Y side you're talking about. I'd love to move out to either the Buffalo or Sheridan area, but have to be content to go out for a few weeks every year because the wife is a big city type of gal.

It was a nice lodge in a great hunting area, I only wish I had a few doe tags in my pocket when Len and I were hunting. We saw tons of deer and the LR oportunities were numerous. Some guys from Michigan shot some dandy bucks up in the heavy timber, beating the bush. Len and I stuck to the open country for the long views.

For the record that buck was taken at 660 yards, just sayin.:)

Len,

If you thought the snow was deep last year, that was nothing! There is over 6 ft right now at pass level with more on the way this weekend. The bighorns are a beautiful place to spend time, I don't even try to draw an elk tag there anymore, because my luck isn't that good for a 23% chance in my favored area. If my honeyhole for deer hunting skunks us this year for mulies due to severe winter kill, I might have to give the bighorns another try this year. Until then, our annual fishing trip from the Sheridan side of the mountains to Cloud Peak resevoir on four wheelers will be in late July, it is a 25 mile rough ride in to pristine Big Horn country.

I have hunted two area's in the Big Horn's. A friend and I hunted mule deer east of Lovell for a number of years. I loved the area even though we did not take a large buck. I saw a huge number of does and many buck but not the trophy that we were looking for.

I have also hunted elk just west of Buffalo. I did not like this area as much as I did the northern area, but it still was the Big Horns and I loved the time I have spent hunting there.

Enjoyed it!!!

Yeah, we ride in from Story. Now I probably won't be able to go this year due to my wife needing surgery and being scheduled three days before our trip.

Give your wife our best, hope everything goes well. Penrose trail is a ton of fun, we're actually headed that direction Friday morning, headed up towards Bear Lodge somewhere for a week of vacation, I can't wait!

Great article Len. I love the Bighorns and can't wait to get back out there. I can't go this year but maybe I'll be able to go next year. The moose are thick east of granite pass along hwy14 all the way to the east slope. They're also pretty thick on down the west slope south of 14 all along Ranger Station rd. Last time we were there we watched a young bull come down a draw heading north, about an hour later we saw the same bull, still headed north, over 3 miles from where we first saw him. They can sure cover some country!
