H-870? Thought it was gone

I was in the local shop today, and I was looking for powders, and to my surprise, I ran across a canister that read ( h-870 )! I was not expecting that. So I swooped that one up. The first time I have seen h870 anywhere. To my best of knowledge, it wasn't there two weeks ago. Just wanted to share that!

I was wondering about temp sensitivity? And is it a cooler burning powder?

I think you excavated a dinosaur bone with a little meat left on it. Don't get crazy beating the bushes for more of it because it hasn't been manufactured for several years. I bought a pound of H870 several or more years ago, unknowing that it was out of production, but it didn't do anything that other similar propellants wouldn't . I buy powders that are replaceable just in case it "dots the i".

h870 was and still is a good powder for the large magnums. for many years it was used in large capacity long barreled guns. wc872 and us869 have very similar burn rates.
it is temp sensitative and on very cold days performance will fall off.
that said it will work well in cartridges like the 7stw, 7x300wby, the ultramags, and the 30x378 provided barrels are long enough.
im sure i could come up with some as well as wc872.

I believe it is still manufactured... A company called Thunderbird selling a powder called T-870 and it claims it is exactly the same as H870, same manufacturer product code and all... Read this a while ago however and havent purchased any as US-869 worked so well for me. However it is too temp unstable and I think I will try to get some T-870 after all.

This is correct! I have a cannister of T-870 from T-Bird and it is the same as the old H-870 which gives more velocity than ANY other powder in the 300 Ultras and similar. It is somewhat temp sensitive and is sooty but gave me excellent accuracy as well as velocity....Rich

H 870 has been replaced with US 869 . It is still a ball powder and temp sensitive like the H870.

Burn rate is reported to be the same.

H-870 works very well in 7mm Rem Mag with 160-175 Nosler bullets.
The velocity and accuracy are very good.

I have worked up hunting loads in the same cold weather using Fed 215 primers with the 160 Nosler @ 3076 f.p.s.


One note -use a good cronograph while working up loads and do not over compress H-870 .

The Thuderbird T-870 is not the same as H-870, it is the same as the Accurate Arms AA8700.

IIRC,
H-870 was mil-surp which dried up, US869 is as close to 870 as hodgdon could get in they're manufacturing process.

Thanks for all the info about replacing H-870. I am down to my last two kegs. It has great performance in the overbore magnums but is temp sensitive. That doesn't bother me since I always keep my bullets in a pocket next to my skin for long shots. Therefore when I shoot they are always the same temp and velocity. The ones in my magazine are just for short quick shots where it makes no difference.

What kind of velocities are realistic with h-870 and the 300 RUM? Say 200gr &180gr.
Has anyone tried it with the 7RUM? 160gr and up.

My accuracy loads I made the 1000+ yard kills with last year shoots the 208 Amax 3220 fps out of a 28" barrel 300 RUM.

I'm looking for H870 but have not been successful. Can you give me a lead where I can purchase several pounds of H870? I use the powder in my 7 mag and have run out of the powder. If I can't find any of the H870 what would you recommend replacing it with?
