First Aftermarket Barrel

I'm thinking about rebarreling my 300 win mag it is a rem 700 5r. It shoots great now and I have 300 rds of rws brass coming. I am going to use 100 for this barrel and save 200 for the next. I am going to most likely put it in a bell and carlson A-5 stock and add a rifle basix trigger all this one at a time you know kind of a slow upgrading project but i figure by this time next year the barrel will be approaching worn out. I live 10 minutes from the rifle range i go to and i am there often. So my question is where do you order these barrels do you just get it shipped to your house then take it all to a smith and have it assembled or let the smith order all of it. What is some good brands, lengths, twists, any info would be appreciated. I will most likely be shooting 210 bergers the gun will see some hunting and a lot of target shooting. I have access to a place where I can shoot out to 1000yd thats the reason for the 210,s. I also have same rifle in 308 that i may do the same too but possibly have it rechambered, when i do maybe 300 short mag, if that can be done. any info opinions or help would be greatly appreciated. I have time and won't be doing this tomorrow or anything just getting some info ahead of time.

Talk to your smith first. Some smiths Like the customer to order all parts and others like to order
everything themselves.

In my opinion ordering everything your self eliminates the delays due to the parts delivery
or wrong parts. If you have every thing in hand when you go to the smith it is normally much
faster because he can give you a start and completion date without delays waiting on parts
and sometimes while waiting, business can pick up and your project will fall behind.

I don't like buying stocks for an example because the owner may not like it, also if the smith
doesent like the brand of barrel he may not guarantee the accuracy.

Talk to your smith and ask lots of questions (Have a list made before you go to visit him) and
if you can live with the answers then you are set to go. NOTE :Never pay the smith more than
1/2 of the total cost!!!!!! if he wants all of the money up front "RUN".

Normally It takes about 2 weeks to build a rifle with no other distractions , most will guarantee
a 7 week delivery from the start date. I have waited over 2 years and it takes all the fun out of
building a custom rifle.(The reason I started building my own).

If you have a good smith , He will take the time to talk with you and come to an understanding
If he doesn't have the time "RUN".

if a 1-10 twist works for you, look at BERGARA bbls, and do it yourself. very easy, and they are tack drivers. +1 on JE's "2 yr wait" that's also why I started building my own rifles, and it's fun and a hell of a lot cheaper.

You might want to qualify the "do it yourself" statement.

There are many techniques and tools that can be employed for building a rifle.

I'm not convinced that you can achieve the same results doing it with hand tools as you can with a lathe.

And, it's easier to do with a Savage by hand than with a Remington.

I would have a smith build a remington and shoulder it after the action has been trued. Slapping a Bergara barrel on with a nut on a stock Remington will give you sub par results. It might work for some but as many have found before it usually gives less than stellar results. My favorite brand of barrels are Brux, I have also been talking with Wade Hull and will be soon adding Shilen to my shop.

There are a lot of good barrel makers including but by no means limitted to some already mentioned plus Kreiger, Bartlein, Hart, Douglas, Lilja, Broughton, Pac-nor, and so on.

Most of the ones on this list have pretty good quality control. But, you can still get a lemon and a good smith will inspect the barrel closely before accepting it.

The main differentiator is likely going to be the guy that chambers and installs the barrel. Ideally, that would include truing the action/bolt at the same time.

They use the "savage" style nut, so all that's required are basic tools and go/no go gages. The bbl's are flawless with mirror smooth bore, and are much easier to do than all the lathe (which I have and use) work.

I have sent actions to Hart, Krieger, and Bartlein and let them perform the entire rebarrel process including action truing. Their services are reasonable and all of the rifles shoot great. Turnaround time was no different than most gunsmiths who are worth using.

I have not used Bergara. So, I can't say one way or the other. I wasn't aware (or had forgotten) they had the barrel nut option. That's a nice option for do-it-yourself-ers that don't own a Savage.

If all you want to do is replace a barrel and want to do it yourself, then that seems like an option. And, if your action is pretty true, then you might get excellent results.

However, to be assured of good results, you need tools to measure and attention to detail.

On the other hand, I do beleive that even the best tools in the wrong hands will underperform.

You get what you pay for. (or, maybe not)

I appreciate the input. I am understanding that all of the uppercuts companies are about equal then kind of a ford chevy thing not really any difference. I had looked into the hart deal with letting them do the chambering and all. I definitely want best results possible. I'm not spending all this money for a half *** rifle. what is the average turn around time for an operation like that. Thanks for the help
