So I have a savage 110 BA and some time in the near future I plan on rebarreling it to get a little more oomph out of it. So I was thinking a 1-10 or 1-9 twist with a 28-30" barrel with an improved chamber. So am I on the track here? Any thoughts? Thanks.

improve the case, get a broughton 5c barrel 32-34" 1-10twist, min spec reamer with good bit of taper for good extraction, with a 5/8th degree throat lead angle. Then coat bullets with moly or HBN. That should pass 3050 with ease.

This is funny. When I read the thread title the first thing I thought was improve it and hang a #7 contour, or bigger, 30+ inch tube on it.

Guess everyone else had the same idea/s. :)

My 338LM Improved will get it done; I have not yet shot my 30" tube standard 338LM. But I plan on doing that Saturday. I can report back then.

Sweet man, I appreciate it. I know 3000fps from a 300gr bullet is a tall order but not impossible. If it consistently gives me 2900+ without showing any pressure signs ill be happy. I definitely want to propel the barnes TTSX 265gr at a little over 3000 (hunting load hopefully). And not to mention making my investment of Lapua brass last longer. So eventually in the near future I will be upgrading to the improved shoulder just wanted to get a little info on barrel length. Thanks again.

My 338 lapua on a savage action and fully floated barrel shot out at 3250fps in a 32 inch barrel at Camp Pendleton scout sniper school, the marines shot 3 inch groups at 1,400 yards. if you want to know more , let me know. Mr H.gun)

Is this a standard, non improved, Lapua 338 case? Either way, I definately want to know more about the specifics of your rifle. That's screaming fast for a 300 grain bullet in a 338 Lapua.

Wait a minute, I will be right back after I go find my hip boots.

MrHengineering, You are about 400 fps faster than norm. I have worked with the lapua and many improved designs for it since it came out in the 90's. I own two standard lapuas now. You would be dead if you touched off a savage action with the quarter stick of dynamite it would take to shoot that fast out of a 338 Lapua. They do not gain that much per inch. maybe 20 fps. I have done that test also at my range. I am not on here to attack anybody and anybody on here can attest to that. But you are way out of the norm with the fastest lapua anybody has ever seen. Maybe the military has some secret recipe not available to me but no way with standard stuff we have available.

To the guy who started the thread, just get an Excalibur, 338-378 IMP, or 338-416 IMP. Then you can safely go well beyond 3000 fps. A really fast one with a 32" barrel could possibly hit the 3200 fps mentioned but more likely not. But with 20 grains more powder than the Lapua. Most of the longest game kills on record were with these three cartridges taking elk beyond 2000 yards.

Dirtball, I ain't got none that big when it gets that deep.
