I recently bought a model 70 with a new heavy sporter Pacnor barrel that is 27" long and an 8 twist. Can someone recommend a good elk and deer load? Thanks.

Few good bullets out there.

Depends on how far your wanting to shoot.

For deer I'd go with the 140 amax, for elk it will work but it better be about 500 yards or further.

140g AB would be a good all around bullet as well as the 140g SST.

I'd try H4831sc, H1000, and Retumbo.

I'm working on my 264 right now with 140g amaxs/H1000. Results have been inconclusive at this point in time due to inconsistency issues. It'll shoot 1/2 MOA one day out, and 1.5 the next, but its due to a lone flyer, everytime.

68.4 gr of Retumbo, WW cases, Fed 215M primers and 140 gr Bergers loaded .010 off the lands gives me 3280fps out of my 27.5 inch Broughton 5r 8 twist barrel. Haven't killed anything with it yet but alot of people say the Bergers will do the job, mostly punching paper and ringing steel with this load but it shoots about 1/2-3/4 MOA for me.

Be very careful trying someone else load in your rifle. It may be OK in apexmtnman rifle but it is 5 grains over the max load given in the Hodgdon manual. But Retumbo is the first powder I would try if I were you. In my 264 Win mag with a Shilen 9 twist 27 3/4" barrel the max load in the Hornady manual of 67.5 grs Retumbo with 129 gr bullet had too much pressure with 130 Nosler Accubonds in my rifle. 66.5 gr Retumbo in a 264 WW case or a WW case reformed from 7mm Rem mag, CCI 250 primer, 130 Nos AB 10 thousands off the lands, average velocity 3350 fps and is a tack driver. I have taken 5 WT deer with it in the past two years from 80 to 250 yards and the bullet has worked perfectly. I would not hesitate to use it on an elk if I got the chance.

RT2506 is right work up slowly to max in your rifle. According to Berger, starting load with their 140 gr VLD with Retumbo is 65 grains, and max is 68.5 grains. Email Berger and ask for their reloading data and they will send you the info you request. I shoot the same load previously mentioned in 2 rifles, a custom built on a Stiller action and a Rem CDL SF both in 264 Mag and that load is safe in both rifles. I couldn't get the velocity or the accuracy out of H1000 or Re22 that I'm getting with Retumbo in my rifles, never tried Re25. Here is Bergers info for the 140 gr VLD

I am shooting the 140 Bergers .010" off lands in mine right now. I found 68.5gr of Retumbo is max safe charge in my rifle at 3224fps average.

For elk the 130 swift scirroco is one you might consider. It is an excellent controled expansion premium hunting bullet with outstanding BC. I have no problem getting the 140's over 3200 fps and the 130 scirroco well into the 3300's fps.

That is what my chrony told me. I have not streched it's legs yet to make sure the math comes out. Exbal works out about 40fps slower than what my chrony reads with my 300WM. Hopefully I will get the chance this coming weekend to test it out to 550yds.

I never use any thing else but 100 grain nosler partition or ball tips
for antalope or deer and have never had one to run more than 10 feet.
my load is RL22 68.0 gr. @ 3680 fps. very accurate load for me.
My point of aim is always high shoulder and spine then I don't waste a lot of meat.

I've used Berger VLD hunting bullets in all three of my 264 win mag and they are devastating on game. I've used both H1000 in my Ruger and Retumbo in my weatherby and RamShot Magnum in my Remington rifle. Retumbo gave me better groups and higher velocities. Personally I will always use Berger just because I've seen them knock game of their feet where they stand.
