What are your favorite 6mm LR bullets?

I'm considering getting a 6mm-284 and would like to know what your favorite bullets are. This rifle will be used for paper punching, varmints and busting rocks. I would also like to chamber this in a Vanguard/Howa short action if possible. Thoughts?

Thanks for your help :)

I have a soft spot for the 107 SMK in my 6-284, it's treated my pretty well. You could chamber it in your SA with a caveat, my OAL is >3" which won't fit in a SA, now you could either single load which is somewhat slower or seat deeper which would negate the whole point of the 6-284, maybe a shorter bullet?

I have a Wby Vanguard / Howa action that I had chambered in 6mm-284 with a 1 in 10 shaw. It would not shoot bullets over 85 gr well and I loaded 70 SMK's and 85 Game Kings in it with good results and velocities around the 4 k mark. I recently rebarreled it with a heavy Krieger in 8 twist and chambered it in 6mm BR. I shoot the 107 smk's in it now and love the rifle. I wish I would have known I would have let you shoot it at the last shoot. The gal with my son was ringing the 550 steel with it, maybe you saw her? Anyway I can't say enough good about a 6mm br and 107's. Very accurate way out there and a real pleasure to load for and shoot.

Dang, small world! my LH/LA Remmy sports a heavy 1-8" Krieger:D shooting the 107's. I am toying with the idea of the 115 JLK's though....

My buddy that shoots a 6mm dasher, 105 berger. He shot 5 world records with this out of a krieger.3000 fps.1000 bench type

Well then maybe I should go with a LA? What length did you trim your brass and where did you seat the base of your bulet in relation to the neck and shoulder?

I do remember your son's friend but don't recall her shooting the 6mm. I would have been tickled to send a couple of rounds down range and BTW it was cool shooting the Lapua and and 300 WM :)

So why did you rechamber from the 6-284 to the 6BR? Was it the overbore? More finicky? I'm planning on having this barrel nitrided if it works well on one or two other barrels.

So far 2 votes for the SMK's

I'm considering the SMK's. Bergers, A-Max and Nosler's in the 105-107 range with an 8 twist barrel.

I'm a speed freak but accuracy is #1 with me, but I will sacrifice a very little accuracy for a good bit of velocity because I think velocity will buy you some forgiveness and flexibility in the field.

I'll probably go with a Broughton 5C but nothing set in stone. there are a lot of good barrel makers out there and I get the feeling that they are so close, most of the time it depends on the particular tube and the maintence cycle of the equipment being used.

3000 fps sounds real fast for that chamber... how long was the barrel/

Thanks Guys! Much appreciated! :)

At 26$ a hundred I think you should try the 107 SMK's for sure. Plus they have treated me well on game too.

I do feel the 6mm 284 is over bore and it is a given the throat will suffer at a pretty good rate, like with most fast chamberings. Plus the fact I now shoot Long range the limited 85gr with the 10 twist was no longer appealing to me. But the main reason I rebarreled was, my shooting requirements have changed since I did the 6-284. With shooting many rounds at targets , gophers, PD's etc. the heat from the 284 was too much. I knew I was going to kill the throat. Now with the 6mmbr I can fire round after round with little or no heat. I really want you to shoot my 6 br. If you are up this way give me a shout and we will meet up. Or, if you can make the shoot in 3 weeks I will have it there too. Best LR practice rig I have.

I have a 6br and 2 6mm-284's one with a 12 twist. I would build it on a long action and the 105 Berger is the one I would try and it is the one I use. I have shot lots of deer with it and it hammers them hard. I have a Hart 9 twist 27inch and with 53gr of Retumbo the bergers are going 3305fps Avg no pressure. Both my 6mm-284's shoot right along side my 6mmBR at 100 yards and they shoot better once you get past 300 yards. I would not worry about it being an overbore just do not get it hot and you will be fine. I have shot the 105 Bergers out of my 9 twist rifle out to 1200 yards amd it was less then 1/2 MOA. The 12 twist I use the 80gr Berger that is a short range rifle. The 6mmbr I also use the 105 Berger.

If you plan to utilize the full potential of the 6-284 you are going to need the long action, I don't recall my trim length (not at home), but I seat my bullets with the junction of the bearing surface & the boat tail just above the neck/shoulder junction of the case, thus eliminating the dreaded "doughnut" problems. I'm using Ramshot Magnum & Fed210M's, best group is sub 2" at 500yds with 3 shots.... yeah, yeah it only counts if it's 5 lol I chickened out.:D

I have been shooting the 115 Berger out of a 240 Wby in a 1-8 twist 30 inch barrel using RL22. It is extremely accurate and works very well on antelope beyond 1K. It also works well on hogs as the high sectional density gives me a lot of penetration. The heavier bullet works well with the large capacity cases. The small eastern whitetails are not much bigger than antelope and the Berger works well on them although I have used 85 grain bullets on them many time with just as good results.

Thanks again for the replies guys. I think I'll go with the long action. I've already got a good doner for that with a S&W 1500 in 270 and I've got the trigger tuned to a very crisp 1 lb. I'll probably try SMK 107's and 105's and see which shoots best. Also looking at the Cutting Edge 88's. I shot a nice .39" ragged hole 4 shot group with some Cutting Edge 180's in my 300 RUM yesterday afternoon.

Jeff, I hear ya on the heat thing... I'm going to get this barrel nitirided and that's supposed to cut back on the heat and protectect from throat erosion. For shooting PD's and gopher, I usually figure on bringing 2 or 3 rifles and shooting round robin to give the barrels a chance to cool. Would love to shoot your 6mm BR though and I'll see ya at the next shoot, if not sooner. :)

my brothers 6-284 on a rem action, 7.8 or 7.5 twist krieger. the 115 dtac don't reach the target. he HAS to shoot the 107 to keep them from coming apart. i woud get an 8 twist in 243 or 6mmbr. much simpler.

Yeah, a 243 would be real sweet too.... maybe as a second 6mm one day. I have this real craving for speed :D
