My Next "Toy" - 338 Lapua

To build or buy? That is the question. I like the Sako TRG-42, its my number 1 choice right now, but that new savage 110ba for the price seems pretty awesome.

I love the look and i hear great things about the Accuracy International, but i think the price makes it unrealistic. of course i dont know what the street price is on that either.

What other choices are there? out of the box, recipies for a build?

Intended use- shooting paper, cause i want a 338lapua, cause i just want one

I was thinking about a build using the AICS, but all the 338 lapua actions i see are too large to fit. i was thinking about the 338 edge, but i have a "need" for the lapua.

One thing that u had better look at is barrel twist ,I think savage is 1_10... and sako is 1_12 .might not be able to shoot 300 gr bullets in sako.

The 110BA is a 1-9 twist in the 338 Lapua.

I've heard good things about the 110BA and the TRG. Blaser Tac 2 uses a 1 in 10" twist. I personally have developed a phobia of slow twist rifles.

There are some guys building 338 LM on Savage 12 actions. If you lean that route, there may be some 338's worth considering that outperform the Lapua Magnum.

Of the options mentioned, I'd have a close look at the 110BA.

What kind of ammo are you looking at? Factory or reloads? What bullets?

I was dead set on a .338 Lapua until I speced out the build. My cost/ benefit run down (my budget all you Lapua lovers, dont crucify me) sent me toward the .338 Edge. The lapua lost the "next year project" debate.

TRG 42 for 338 LM are available in 10" twist. I have one.

Whether the 300 grain is "better" than the 250 for the 338 LM is debated. Depending on your loads, the velocity become equal at about 1100 yards, thereafter the 300 grainer is faster. The 300 is marginally better in wind and has higher energy.

I will reload, I am not sure what bullets/components i will use. Guess i will figure that out when i get the gun.

i have never looked at the blaser, but i am assuming its more than i want to pay (4500) without scope. i figured that with the money i save on the savage, i can have it worked over by a gunsmith (dont know who works on savages, or if its even worth it). but for some reason i am stuck on the TRG, its got "cool" 60* bolt throw (not the only reason i like it)

keep the ideas coming, pros/cons also.

What about the CZ 550 H.E.T. ? anyone shoot one? price seems right. i like CZs i think i own 4 of their rifles, i also own 3 savages, only 1 remington.

also, i have never been able to find one of these fabled remington 700 mlr rifles, i would also consider that if i could find a price and availability.

anyone have a build they liked for the 338 lm?
