why a 7mm

ok I don't wont to start a fight but can some one tell me why the 7mm is so popular especially when there are so many other calibers that are better for hunting and target shooting.

don't wont to start a war but every time I look at a post that some one is looking for a new rifle a lot of people suggest some form of a 7mm a little incite would help

but so do other calibers if I was going off weight and bc i would not go with a 7mm even in the hunting aspect lets say 500 and under there are many other calibers that will do a better job and same go's 500 and up is it just preference or is it just let get what every one else has I just don't see why every one like the 7mm

My question is why not?

The 7mm has never failed me with a multitude of game from antelope up to elk. That being said, I lean toward the .30 cal these days, but I just can't find fault in my experience with the 7mm.

l live over in turkey so gun laws arnt any ware as nice as your laws, we can own rifles but thay cost alot and you need a licience for each gun that costs $2500 every 4 years. so when we buy a rifle we buy something that we will like. l have had 4 rifles and all in 7mm rem mag. some people say that the 7mm rem mag dont kill game like the .30 calibres do but l dont belive that a bit. l once shot a ibex from 670 meters the bullet went in its back leg and came out of its other hind leg. l was amaised to se that the exite wound was so massive that the ibex didnt have a back leg. it was blowen right off. and the rock that was behinde the animal was coverd in blood and sh.t. the channels were so massive that the animals stomache was ripped apart. now a 30-06 wouldnt do that or a .308 at that distance. but if l buy a nother rifle lm gonna go for the 7mm STW or the 8x68s

Recoil............. 7MM 175 -180 grain bullets can exceed 600 BC numbers. It takes 210 and over grain 30 cals to get that high of bc numbers.

It is kind of required to have a muzzle brake to shoot 30 cal Ultra mags. I owned a 30-378 and shot mostly 210, 220, 240 bullets I had friends that that even with the brake thought that it was unpleasant. My 7 STW is brakeless and a simular 28 barrel. I have loaned it to various people for successful Elk hunts and no body has ever retrieved a bullet. They were all pass throughs. Dead is dead.

I believe that there are very few who have the ability and equipment to effectively hunt at extreme ranges. I have never lost a big game animal. I have always had a fear of wounding one and having it run off. So I will not even shoot unless I'm within my self imposed range.

pit bull - the gun is more important than the caliber. also the experimentation ; load work all contribute. what gun do you have? and what caliber is it that does so well??

Internet polls are distorted.

Many calibers and cartridges exist because they all have a strong following.

30-30 Winchester may be the most popular cartridge of all time.

For everyone here that owns a 7mm, most of us own several other cartridges/calibers as well.

roninflag I have many calibers 6mm, 270 wsm,300wsm,300ultra short,300rum,338rum,375rum,338ultra max,338 edge and having all these calibers i have kill deer,antelope,elk and bear with most and now day's most just site in the safe during hunting season because my best results are with the biger calibers not saying that the others don't work but I have had meny animals drop and get back up where the biger calibers they have stayed down now don't get me wrong the animals I'v shot with the smaller calibers still died but had to do some tracking to fined them

You can bet that many have the same anecdotal good results with 7mms and therefore like them. Free will is a good thing.

I have over twenty 7mm's. I have six 7mm STW's alone. The reason I like them is because they offer excellent ballistic performance without the need for a muzzle brake. Ballistically the 7mm STW and 6.5 STW offer about the best ballistics I know of that can be shot well without having to go to a brake. In other words they will get you to long range without knocking the pee out of you. This appeals to many people. My wildcat 7mm's off the 280 case shoot extremely well at long range and are extremely pleasant to shoot many times at the range.

When I am dead serious on a trophy animal I have my big boomers because I play all the odds. As you go up in caliber your odds of success go up and I play those odds. But I have plenty of fun shooting my 7mm's at deer and antelope. In my opinion that is where they belong. With a perfect shot any animal is dead with any caliber. After over 40 years of hunting I know few oportunities are perfect.

cheaperer bullets, less powder, less recoil, with less recoil you can make the rifle lighter, fast and flat, high b.c bullets, big bullet selection, can get factory ammo anywhere, less meat damage, less muzzle report, less meat damage.
I personally dont own a 7mm. I had one and sold it and now I kick myself when I think about it.

If 7mm/.284 cal are inferior to 7.62mm/.308 cal then would it be true to say that 7.62mm/.308 cal is inferior to the 8.59mm/.338 cal? from an energy point of veiw YES, but from a practicall point of veiw NO. Every gun from the .17 cal to .510 cal has a practical use. How you want to appy that use is up to the individual.

I once was the kind of guy that thought that the bigger the better. Always with no exception. Then I started looking around and found out that I didnt need to use as much gun as I thought, not that more gun hurts, its just that less gun doesnt hurt either.

angus-5024 you will have to explain the less meat damage because I have shot several deer and antelope with a 6mm and 270wsm and had more damage then with one of my .338
