I hope this is not too rude to join a group and immediately post a request for information.

A group of us are going to try and go to Colorado for the 2nd Rifle Elk season this year. We decided on Unit 67 because of it's proximity to Gunnison. Some of the group will probably have to fly in order to make the trip.

What I would like to find is any local knowledge for unit 67. Not as specific as take county road such and such, climb to top of the ridge and that's where the elk will be. But more of general areas to concentrate out scouting/hunting efforts. There should be at least one hunter draw a tag. Hopefully 2 or 3.

Anyway, if anyone is willing to help out I would greatly appreciate it.

I went as a spotter last year with a couple guys who drew tags in unit 66. I never saw an elk alive. I did hear a couple bugles after a gentleman shot a bull up in the timber above where we were hunting. I did see a cow moose. She came within 40 yards of me while we were sitting late one afternoon.

I had so much fun, I came home and bought a new to me Remington 700 LSS LH rifle in .300 RUM. I put a temporary scope on it and shot a white tail doe with power level I ammunition in January. She was just inside 300 yards and I hit her in the neck just in front of the shoulder.
I plan on taking taking it to the range and seeing what my limits are as far as range. And try some different ammunition.

Anyway, I am excited about this fall and look forward to getting up into the mountains again.

If you would prefer to contact my outside the list, my address is USA_774*at*y a h o o . c o m

Thanks,

Welcome,
You gave your self a pretty good clue above. I cut out articles (Field & Streams etc.) back in the day when I was a kid and I decided to eliminate the old excuse of "they just ain't come down yet" by going straight to the top to start hunting. Works for me. Good luck.

I've hunted near there in unit 55 in the past myself. We may return this year, but may go to a different area entirely. From my experience, the guys with me were flatlanders, and wanted to stay within half a mile of camp. I went off on foot, and climbed one of the ridges, and when I got close to the snow and timberline, presto, I was seeing lots of elk sign, and came across a small herd. The other guys, well, they didnt fair so well. Unless some of the experts tell me Im wrong, Im still convinced I had the right idea, go high and away from camp.
I havent decided what I'll take, though my 300RUM may be what I go with.(200gr Partitions). Make sure you dont skimp on a scope for it. Take a look at the Zeiss Conquest, 3-9X at least. The gun kicks hard, and will beat apart a cheap scope. The last thing you want, is a 6x6 bull walk in front of you, and the scope not be clear, too dark, or shifted its point of impact.

I hunt out in Wyoming every year and will also be helping a friend on an archery bull elk hunt in AZ in September this year. We have great success most of the time, not only seeing game, but usually filling whatever tag(s) we have. It's amazing how many people spend a lot of money to go out there and then don't want to or are scared to get out of sight of their vehicle or camp. I can't tell you how many times people have complained to us about no game in the area we're hunting, while we are going in 2 or 3 miles from the nearest road where we camp and seeing a variety of animals. You have to earn an animal nowadays with the number of people going out and the further you get away from the crowd by going deeper, or in your case higher, the better chance you will have for a good hunt.
