do you need to coat a bead blasted stainless barrel?

I am getting a rifle rebarrelled with a stainless steel bead blasted finish. Do I need to put a clear matte cerekote finish over the barrel or can I leave it as such? I would assume since it is stainless I can leave it, but am not 100% sure.

I would think it would be ok, my stainless have held up well, with minimal care, time in snow and rain. In a salt type area like AK, DONT know.

Probably be just fine, but on the otherhand I just looked at a barrel built be a well known gunsmith from a well known brand, and it had a small fleck of rust on it. Been in storage for awhile, and wrapped in a sleeve. The spot was minor, and cleaned right up with a nickle and some ATF. Falls right back to the rule that says if it will harden, it will rust

I have a safe full and none have been coated. I always bead blast everything to match including, tube, action, bases, rings and bottom metal. Blasting the black off of the HS detachable mag and bottom metal is a pain lol...

I agree that you should be fine. I have several with a bead blasted finsih and have never had a problem. My son has a couple of the Browning A-Bolts as does a friend of mine. Both of theirs have started to rust and pit. My sons wasn't too bad and we were able to clean it right up, but my friends finish was just about ruined. It was his own fault, he left it in a closed case. These were both Brownings and I'm convinced there is something different about the composition or type of SS that they use.

What we started using on my sons is a rifle/gun protective wax made by Flitz. This stuff works real well and we only apply it once a year, usually before our first fall hunting trip. I started putting it on mine as well since I was so impressed with it. It's similiar to this polish but I think it's marked gun-rifle wax.

I have seen a lot of 400 series stainless rust over the years. I think the harder it is, the easier it forms rust. There's a wax like compound sold that smells like apples. It contains and acid neutralizer plus a rust inhibitor. I used to use the stuff on by bird guns that had bare white metal on the recievers. Stopped that problem 100%. I gotta find that stuff by Flitz as I've long lost the can of the wax stuff

I can't remember where I bought this from. Usually shop at Brownells, Grafs, Sinclair etc but I don't see the exact product at any of them. The bottle says Flitz Rifle/Gun Wax. It also says specially blended with Carnuba and Bee's wax. I swear by this stuff, it has held up very well.

I misplaced , a S&W stainless 44 mag in my local mountains. Area gets about 6 feet of snow, 4 yrs. later I found it, didnt look to bad, grip chewed a bit non stainless was rusty, would not cycle, soaked it in motor oil,works now,stainless held up better than I thought
