ALS 50 BMG AR15 Uppers

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has recently purchased an ALS 50 BMG AR15 upper or have even heard from the company? I was curious about the current wait times and want to purchase one but the emails I've been sending them have not been replied to..... I'm thinking the Armalite AR-50 might be the way to go if I want a 50 BMG this year. Also, if any owners want to throw in their input about the company and product that would be great.

they had an out of battery detonation I think last yr in a rifle at the world finals 50 bmg shoot. Not sure it the company has recovered after that. I know I saw the recall in the VHP magazine. If you can keep from blowing up in your face I heard they are pretty accurate

These are incredibly accurate i have one with a serious custom lower seriously accurate out to a mile and not to mention this gun was used in the movie "the gun"

pretty hard for this to happen as long as all the parts have been fitted by a professional. I own one and i dont even see how that can happen period.

Just wanted to bump this in case anyone knows anything new. From what I can find, the incident (no direct knowledge) followed by the recall was mid 2009.

I called ALS in early 2009, and the wait was two years. Mine has been a little longer, but I won't blame that totally on fixing recalled rifles. I told ALS I was working overseas, and wasn't in a huge hurry, so that might have had something to do with it.

Either way, got the call Friday that it's done. Have to return the call today and get it sent.

I just really haven't heard anything out there since the middle of 2009. But since he's still making and shipping conversions, someone must by ordering and buying them.

Their safety issue was quickly resolved. Once identified they contacted all owners and offered a free bolt modification that prevents the AR15 hammer from being able to contact the firing pin unless the bolt is completely closed. Mine was done in 3 months.
With all the rifles sold over the past 10+ years the out of battery discharge had only occurred 1-2 times (from what I understand). That's obviously 1-2 times too many. Apparently several things had to occur simotaneously to cause the discharge.

With this problem resolved I only see a couple cons to the ALS-50.

CONS:
1. Receiver port isn't long enough to eject a loaded round. To eject a loaded round you must open the bolt then with a finger nail or the tip of another loaded cartridge press the claw extractor in order to release the loaded round. Then you must either turn the rifle on its right side then shake out the round. Or reach in and pull it out with your fingers (you need girly fingers to do it this way). This sucks.
However empty cases eject normally. This is not a problem if you fire every round you chamber.

2. The bolt fits loosely in the receiver when open (like 1/8" slop) This gives the feeling if a poorly machined component. When closed the bolt fits correctly and solidly. This is not a performance issue, just an observation.

3. Rifle needs a carrying handle near the fore grip. It is VERY front heavy and awkward to carry. A carrying handle at the balancing point would be very handy.

PROS:
1. Very accurate
2. super sexy looking.
3. Very little recoil (muzzle break works very well)
4. Good quality finish and fit (except for the bolt when open, see my comment above)
5. Good looking butt stock.
6. Solid adjustable bipod.
7. Relatively low cost.

One suggestion: when ordering an AR15 lower receiver be sure to get the single shot receiver. Otherwise a standard AR receiver serial number will categorize the rifle as a semi-automatic which could make it illegal in certain areas. Plus the single shot receiver makes the rifle look more correct.
