Typically what bullet does a .308 like

I just bought a new Rem 700 .308 with the 5R barrel. Its a 11.25 twist. I have shot the hornady customs 150gr SSTs out of it and it loves them makes a ragged hole @ 100yds 2840 @ the muzzle. Shot some hornady customs 168gr spbt out of it shot about an inch @ 100yds the run 2700fps. I figured these would shoot better being a heavier bullet shooting slower. Seems to me more speed less accurate being with my bow, slug gun. Well was just wondering if anyone on here could give me some input on the 11.25 twist rate on the barrel and what bullets they shot and it likes. Gonna try some 175grs next time, my buddy tells me to just shoot the 150s but want a bullet that will be more stable at longer distances.Well if yall can help thanks, take it easy.

the 5-r is one of the MOST accurate factory rifles. it should shoot everything good. bergers and other match bullets like the SMK will be among the best. plastic tips like accubonds, balistic tips and sst not far behind. a 165 spbt ( horn or sierra) and some varget or I-4064 also very good. all match bullets from 150 to 185. the higher velocity and higher bc bullets will have less windage to deal with at the longer ranges. you can run the numbers, a 155 scenar driven very fast vs 175 mk driven very fast . the 308 is a very forgiving round you should get good accuracy throughout the velocity range. enjoy . nice rifle.

In most cases the 1 in 11 to 1 in 12 twist are best suited for the 168s or lighter (Like the 150)

The 1 in 11.25 may shoot the 175s at 308 speeds but it may not be the best( most accurate)

Each rifle/barrel has there likes and dislikes so you will just have to try different bullets.

I had very good luck with the 168gr SMKs in my match rifle (A 1 in 12 twist) with a near max
load.( 41.5 grains of 3031) The 168 SMKs would shoot under 1 MOA all the way out to 600
yards with Iron sights.I never placed a scope on it to see just how good it could shoot.

My rifle did not like the 175s at all. but your twist is a little faster so yours might. Good Luck.

sound- this guy is shooting targets made out of paper. not ibex. also they load the 308 warm ( some load it hot) . many f-tr shooters in tex/okla use the 185 with very very accurate results at long range. the palma guys shoot the 155.

I have a 1:12 that is shooting very well with 178 Hornady BTHP. That can be found in their Superformance Match grade ammo. My smallest to date is .219" (42.4grn Ramshot TAC) but can't tell you the velocity as I have not had a chance to use a Chrony because of the weather. My next load is 44.0 grains of RL15 @ .377" All these are shot at 100yrds. You just have to pick a bullet, find a powder or two that you potentially want to use and try them out. Start low and work up in .2 or .3 grain increments. As it looks like you are shooting mostly factory ammo, Try the Superformance hunting and match, Black Hills match, Federal Gold Medal Match, Nosler Custom, and Cor-Bon. All are good ammo. See if you can latch on to any M118LR mil spec ammo. Same stuff snipers use. It utilizes RL15 powder, and 175 SMK's.

Try the 208grain A-max and push it with RL17. Great BC, good velocity AND accurate.

My current 11x 308 shoots the 155VLD, 168AMAX, 175SMK, 178AMAX, 190SMK, 200SMK and 208AMAX's very well.

Traditionally the 308 has always been best suited for 150-168 grain pills. With modern powders and twists tighter than 14,13,12 which have long been the traditions, getting good velocities out of heavier bullets is now the norm. Alot of shooters are still stuck on what the 308 HAS been known for and not what it can do today.

If you get into handloading, you will find that your 5R will shoot alot of loads well. Maybe not real fast, but real accurate.

Roninflag - I don't know but that the 308 may well be capable of taking an Ibex reliably at 500 yds and perhaps 800 yds or more. The key is to hit what you're aiming at which the right shooter and ammo should be quite capable of.

As Eichele points out, better bullets and faster twists make it a venerable weapon in the right hands.

The big magnums may melt a hole in a piece of steel. But, that's not much good if you don't hit what you're aiming at.

Michael Eichele is an excellent source for the .308. He helped me out quite a bit when I was wanting to do my .308 build. Right now I am using the 178 Hornady BTHP. With a BC of .530, I will be able to go a long ways. Haven't been able to check velocity, but I know deer will be in trouble to a considerable distance (800ish yards). I am planing to go to the 200 SGK (suggested by ME for its ability to open at low velocity) or 208 A-max (superior BC and low velocity for opening up) for really reaching out. I have yet to really play with that load since I am more centered on finding a good load to shoot groundhogs with out to 1000yrd or more. It has plenty of oomph with this bullet to shoot varmints that far and farther. Should my velocities be at or near where I want it to be with the heavy bullets, I expect to get to 900+ for at least whitetail sized animals anyway. Shot placement will be key in this application. At high altitude it will really shine.

Robbo- i have not shot anything witha 308. i have shot a lot with a .243. you are accurate and deadly with that tikka i am sure you will do the same with a 308. roninflag
