Accurate 7mm mag?

Hey All

I am new to the site, I have been shotting long range for a few years but I have recently wanted to buy a rifle designated as a long range elk hunting rifle. I think the 7mm rem mag with a 162 grain A-max will fit the bill quit nicely. Here's my problem, I can't seem to find what I'm looking for and cant afford a custom rifle. So here's my question: Who makes the most accurate factory 7mm mag rifle for 1000.00 or less? I have been looking at the savage 111 long range hunter, however I have couple issues. First I am not a real fan of muzzle brakes and the LRH comes with one factory. Second I read the Dae Petzle review and he seemed to be really impressed with the rifle but I read a post on here with a person not being paid to like a rifle saying they were not impressed. What are some good options for an accurate 7mm mag? Also when I say accurate I don't mean 3 rounds at 100 yards I mean like 5 rounds at 200 and beyond. Any sugesstions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Savage BVSS 112 in 7mm mag that I really like. Northland Shooters Supply still has a few of them in stock, but I don't think Savage produces them anymore.

For 1000 bucks you could easily buy a Stevens/Savage action and fit a nice Shilen or other pre-fit barrel on it. Add a stock and maybe an aftermarket trigger and you should be good to go.

I have a savage 116 with factory brake, the accuracy is good with 162 amax, shooting .5moa. The velocity is low with 22" of barrel and 2" of brake making up the 24" barrel. I think the long range hunter is 2 inches longer than mine. With the factory recoil pad, I don't see a need for the brake. I agree that the BVSS would be a great choice. You could also look for a used Sendero, I have one in 7RUM and the accuracy is about the same with the Amax only 500 fps faster than my savage 7RM.

Northland Shooter's Supply is out of the 7 mag in 112BVSS, but they still have the acitons. I'd pick up an action, heavy duty recoil lug and a nice Lilja or whatever barrel in the caliber you choose, then put it all in a B&C A2 style stock and skim bed it. Put a Defensive Edge adjustable cheekrest on the stock and you're in about 1K and it should shoot nasty good.

Jim at NSS also told me he would take the barrel off of one of the 300WM 112BVSS guns he does have in stock for you and sell a "stocked action" if that is more appealing. Then just mount your barrel and shoot lasers.gun)

I am in no way affiliated with NSS or B&C or DE, this just seems like a logical combination that will shoot good for years and should outshoot the various Remmys in stock form including the Sendero. I've seen a couple Senderos shoot dimes, but a couple that wouldn't also.

Or, just buy the 300win mag in 112bvss for $6xx, buy a barrel kit in the caliber of choice with wrench and go/no go gauges and have a switch barrel system you can change yourself (one of the many benefits of the Savage) and still be under a grand...

Picked it up from Northland for around $600.00. I touched up the muzzle crown and bedded it. Nice accurate rifle.

At 13 lbs with the scope on it it's pleasant to shoot with any bullet and load.

You never mentioned the weight of the rifle. If money is a limiting factor you could buy a Remington model 700 SPS for around $575 or perhaps a bit less if you shop around. This model has a 26" barrel and no iron sights.

Then go to Stocky's and find a laminate stock that appeals to you if you want to add some weight. If you want to get it as light as possible and still stay on your budget, get one of the Alaskan Ti models. Price is $209 to $235 depending on which model.

I put a 243 SPS into a non bedding block Ti with no bedding and it shot with great precision. Your rifle will weigh more but that 243 is just over 7 lbs with a 4-12 x 40 Leupold.

If you have a standard sporter or mag and want the lightest drop-in get the 2265/7 Alaskan TI.
If you have a standard sporter or magnum, want a full length block and don't mind like a couple more ounces the 2461/2/3/4 Alaskan II is the one.


You should have some money left over to buy an after market trigger. I put a rifle basics in that previously mentioned 243 and it works great.

Add all the items up and you are still under $1000

Thanks for all the feed back guys, I really appreciate it. The BVSS looks pretty sweet. I have a good smith close here, I will call and see what he would charge to put a barrel on an action for me. I would like to keep it around 10 pounds. In the mean time I am going to keep an eye out for a BVSS. I really think I like Savage. I am still thinking about the Long Range Hunter but I would like to hear more about it.

I just picked up a Rem 700 SPS 7mm Mag for $450 including shipping from Budsgunshop.com (in case you are interested in the set up previously mentioned).

I know this is a little late. LOL. But Remington makes a (Model 700 Long Range) in 7mm Mag. Picked it up at Cabela's in Ft Worth for $730 Brand New. You can pick one up any time for that price. That was'nt on sale. It comes with a 26" heavy Barrel (Sendero Barrel without the Fluets) 1 & 9.25 Twist rate For those 140grn -180grn bullets. Use a Vortex 4-16X50 LR Scope. $600 All ways use a 20 MOA Base it helps keep the scope straight and gives you more elavation. I use Talley Base's and it works just fine. I did not Glass bed my rifle due to the a Aluminum bedding in the stock. I didnt see a point with 5 rounds that could be covered with a dime at 100yrds. I use 168grn Berger Bullets. Its just what I like. Hornadys should be just fine. At 1000 yrds I was shootin at a 12" steel plate with a 2.5" round circle on it and was 6" right 1st shot do to high winds and 250' below sea level (California) 2nd shot was 2.5" left and 3rd shot was 3.75" right. Elevation was spot on. No work was done to the gun. All Factory!!!! It shot like this with the factory HSM ammo 168 grn Burger Bullets. I have no complaints. All this was under $1500 for everythang. Scope, rings, MOA base and Rifle. It took my 7mag 22.75 moa,s to reach this. But I had to dial 22.5 moa's do to the 1/2 moa click value scope I was useing. Hope this helps.
