I am looking at buying a 30" barrel threaded for a Large shank savage action and chambered in .300 RUM.

My question is, what should I look for in a Savage action to accomodate this barrel? Is there any std. action that will support this without a bunch of modification?

Long action or magnum Action length?
What size bolt face?
What about magazine size?
Other requirements?

Thanks for the help guys.

the large shank/small shank is kindof confusing. the large shnak is usually on short actions and the small shank is usually the long action (it all deals with barrel diameter). the large shank is on their target heavy barrel models (usually) go to savage shooter forum and they can help with your serial #. some over there have build 300 rums on short actions but they are a pain to deal with. there were a few 300 ultras with large shanks built but finding one of those is another story
i'm not sure what the new 110 ba action is (large or small) but it should fit 300 ultras in the .338 lapua mag. you might look to see if it is one of those elusive long action/large shanks other than that your stuck with a single shot thats hard to load/unload
good luckgun)

Thanks Load. The issue is that I have an opportunity to buy the barrel used but it is a large shank. I dont have the action yet. Sounds like finding a large shank action to fit the .300 RUM would be difficult?

I cant help you with a repeater, but for single shot you can get a Savage target action fron Northland Shooters Supply, they are large shank, but short action, so you would have to remove the bolt to extract a live round. also you would need to install a magnum boltface bolthead. Sinarms can turn the large shank barrel down to a small shank for a good price, then you could use a small shank long action with a magnum boltface.

I have heard of guys getting the actions opened up to feed the longer rounds, but dont know the details. Lots of Savage info and knowledge over at Savage Shooters forum also.

yes if you want a repeater but the standard shortmag bolt head for the short action will work on your build. only you'll have a very slow shooting single shot. probably why the barrel is being sold in the first place.gun)that and 300rum barrels shoot out fairly quickly. you could get a 300 rum barrel from mcgowen for about 300$ new in small shank but you'd still have mag issues and end up with a single shot just a little easier to load

this does bring up a good point
i built a rifle for a guy and another for myself were i used a heavily modified remington bottom end so we could have detachable mag the only issues i see with the ultra is if your using a stock with an allumn bedding block there isn't enouph room. probably getter done with a wood or synthetic though.lightbulb

I have a factory small shank 300 rum action I am using in my edge build. It will handle 3.79" Coal., when I got it it would take 3.6" Coal. All I did was remove the old mag and have a bottom metal made to take accurate mags or AI mags for the 338 lapua in the 3.85"size . I also had to make a few mods to the mag.

Here are a few pics before I finish it.

Buy any long action Savage and have the barrel machined to std threads.. it is inly a 1/16 of an inch difference.. I am currently doing this as I got a great deal on a 6-6.5X47 Lapua barel but it was large shank.. Dropped it off at my buddies place and should have it next week...
