i want to change over from the 7mm to something a little different. what are some caliber options i can do out of this rifle. its a remington 700 cdl in 7mm rem mag
converting a 7mm rem mag to another caliber.

Anything that fits on a standard magnum bolt face. What do you want to do with it. Great donor action. If it shoots good you have a good rifle already.

There are many things above mentioned, Customize to the short Win mag, 7 STW. Or rebarrel for your needs. The question is "Does it shoot the way you want it to as is?"

if you want to have someone ream the chamber and refinish, go with 7mm stw, if you want to rebarrel and use for medium game at some distance you might like a 257 weatherby mag, or a 270 weatherby mag for heavier game at longer ranges, only downfall is speed, if the game is to close and your bullet selection is off you will get some pass through and runoffs.

could i do the 6.5 stw from this rifle? i love the 6.5mm and would love to mess with this caliber. any info would be very helpful

Yes you can. I have two 264 STW's and they are outstanding. You can shoot a 130 grain .56+ bc at over 3500 fps. A .612 bc at near 3400 fps. Ballistically it will top the 7mm STW with a 168 Berger because of the faster bullet with the same bc. It is a top long range deer antelope rifle and one of the most popular I did for guys in the south wanting a top bean field rifle. Run those numbers against anything you can think of. It is about the best out there. Recoil is not bad either.

since you've been considering the infamous barrel smokers, another close option to the 264 stw is the 6.5x300 wby which also uses the same bolt face, holds about 5 grains less powder but is more efficient with the double radious, so there about tied, and no im not saying one is better than the other, its just another options, neither is a standard so you'll have to form brass anyway or pay like 3$ a peice from quality cartridge.

I have converted 3 win mags to other calibers. The first was a Browning BBR 300 win mag that I put a 26" Douglas XX 6.5 barrel on to make a 6.5 rem mag
Right now I am shooting a 130 gr Scirrocco II at 3200 fps
A buddy liked mine so much he had me rebarrel one of his 300 win mags, a Vanguard, into a 6.5 rem mag with a 26" Shilen
Recently I rebarreled a 264 win mag Winchester Model 70 push feed into a 375 Ruger. Put a 24" #5 contour Pac-Nor 3 groove barrel on it
Right now it is shooting a 270 gr TSX at 2850 fps
Either of these 2 calibers is an easy conversion for a win mag, either have commercially available dies and cases, which can be a big deal.
Oh, almost forgot that I also rebarreled a 338 win mag into a 338RUM. The RUM has a slightly larger case head but the CRF picked the case head up just fine and did not have to do any bolt face work. The rifle had a long magazine which is a pre requisite since the RUM should go in a longer action. Have to seat the bullets pretty deep but everything worked out and it is shooting a 225 gr TTSX at 3100 fps

would i have to open the magazine up to allow it to feed from the mag? could i use it as a single shot? i have two rifles right now that im considering this caliber for, what twist barrel? any suggested loads? any and all info would be very nice to have and study on.

It would depend upon which caliber you choose and the length of your magazine. The 6.5 rem mag is a short action case and you would have no problem with feeding from the magazine. The 375 Ruger is engineered to be fired out of a 3.4" magazine and action and you would have no problem feeding from any magazine that currently is feeding a win mag case. The 338 RUM would depend upon how you have the chamber reamed.
The twist would depend upon what bullet you want to shoot and the bearing length of said bullet.
What caliber are you referring to and what bullet are you wanting to shoot?

im interested in the 6.5 stw, being had in a rifle i have which is in 7mm rem mag right now. bullet wise i would love to shoot the 130-140 vld hunting rounds. i want to know what all i will have to have done to have this round chambered in this gun.

now ive also got a 300 win mag on a enfield p14 action, that i would like to chamber to something diff. i have looked at the .257 stw, 8mm rem mag, .358 sta, etc. would any of these rounds fit that action?
