If it is a "true" 1 in 8 twist it will stabilize our bullets

I got this quote in an e-mail when asking a manufacturer about their bullets. If the barrel manufacturer says it is a 1 in 8 isn't that a "true" 1 in 8? A friend said he heard it from another shooter that a barrel made from a button might not be a true 1 in 8.


As I understand it, the button does some bulging as is goes down the barrel and that might cause some changes in the twist somehow but wouldn't the designer account for that so the end result is a 1in 8 twist?

Can anyone enlighten me?

It is true that button rifled barrels often arrive how ever they turned out.
This is one of many reasons I prefer cut rifled.

If it is made by a reputable barrel maker and he tells you it's a 1 in 8 then it is.

Be careful of anything you hear second hand .people will tell you almost anything and normally
it was told to them by a friend.

Barrel makers don't need to lie because it can/will come back on them and hurt sales.

I use both cut and buttoned barrels and I always get the twist rate that I requested.

Before you buy, talk to the barrel maker because some button rifled barrels in particular are fraction twists (ie 8.25) but marked 8 for example. It all depends on their button.

They know and will tell you.

Also check and ensure that the bore is the size you need. I know that some run a tighter bore than others and depending on the bullet they may work well and may not.

For example, several years ago, Tim North at Broughton was using a tight button that the barrels just would not shoot the AMAX bullets well in 30 caliber as they tend to be "fat" and shoot well in looser bores. He has since got a new button. An no it was not in a tight Palma bore, just his standard 30 caliber bore.
