What would you do?

I came across a really good deal on a used Rem 700 CDL in 30-06. I'm thinking I could do some modifying since I don't have much in it starting out. I mostly hunt whitetail and would like to eventually push my range effective range out as far as my abilities will allow me. I have a long way to go in my abilities, but it sure is fun thinking about building a rifle that will be ready when I finally get there.

Lets put the budget at $1000 (before optics).

Muzzle break needs to be included.

I'm open to changing calibers.

Have the ability to reload but would like the option of being able to use factory ammo.

Weight is not a big issue.

The gun is currently factory, no modifications.

I suggest you sell the Remington and buy a used Savage long action since you want a 30-06 or a short action for a .308 or .243. Then buy a new barrel which you can swap out yourself. Then sell the old barrel to recoup some money. You can also glass bed your action in the original stock yourself. This should keep you under $1000. I do not like brakes which make to much noise. If recoil is a big factor for a brake a .243 will kill a deer at 1,000 yds without much recoil plus they are very accurate. A 1 in 8" twist for the .243 will allow you to use bullets as heavy as 115 grain for very long range when you reload.

Find a good gunsmith that will replace the barrel in 280 rem and that will be all you will need.

The 280 is a great long range caliber and has less recoil (Much) than a 30/06 and doesn't need
a break.

Later on if you want a break you could have the smith install one if your budget doesn't
allow for one now.

The 280 is simply a 30/06 necked down to 7mm and with lots of bullet choices and factory
ammo it is capable of 1000 yard shots.

The 700 action is a great one to build on and you already have it. With proper truing and a new
barrel it should exceed all of your expectations.

All of this should come well under your budget to.
