I'm wondering if anyone knows of a 30cal wildcat that packs more of a punch than a 300WSM when loaded with 200gr accubonds (or similar) but still cycles though a medium action.
Preferably something that isn't next to impossible to obtain or make brass for like a 30 Jonson or the short action lazzeroni.

I have the short action Lazzeroni (7.82 Patriot) & have never had any trouble finding brass, albeit it's rediculously expensive +$2.00 per case; it's very strong brass that has lasted a LONG time in my 700. Some cases are seeing in upwards of a dozen reloads..... come to think of it, I haven't lost a single piece of brass yet. (knock on wood).

Not sure it will work thru the action you want but I like the look of the 300 Jazz. I think Norma is bringing it out as the 300 Norma mag. It's the 338 NM necked down to 308.

if you wanta get serious about a big three hundred, and want the easy way out; then look at the .300 Ackleys (all four of them!)

*#1 is just a little longer than a standard 30-06 length case, but of course will not clean up in a standard 30-06 case.

*#2 is similar, but will clean up in a 30-06 chamber

*#3 is similar to the .300 WSM, but with the .348 case's rim intact (excellent dangerous game cartridge)

*#4 is simply an 8mm mag case necked down to 30 cailber. It's almost exactly the samething as a .300 Weatherby or a .300 Jarrett. An overbore cartridge, but really shines with big heavy and long bullets

I think that the #2 Ackley would be the ticket for you

You don't by chance have a link to a page with more information on these Ackleys? My version of quickload, doesn't seem to have much information on them, and I'm not having much luck with a general google search.

The data I have came right out of his writings. There's a good bit of data out there about the .300 Ackley (the one off an 8mm mag case), as it's a favorite of 1000 yard shooters. The other two are harder to find data on.

The #1 & #2 are in the 2.5" area, but one is a little longer than the other for a cleanup in a standard 30-06 barrel (somebody on here has a #2). The actual numbers, I don't know for sure. But I'd say they are just a tad shorter than a .308 Norma mag. Looks like you could reduce the loads about 10% for a .308 Norma, and work your way up from there. Ackley does say the the #2 will take 67 grains of 4350 for 3060 fps in the 180 grain bullets (max load), so I think the rounds are not all that far apart. Also he says that the Apex is similar as well as the Wade. But as close as these are to the .308 Norma, I think it would be much easier to build a .308 Norma mag. You have dies on the shelf, the reamer is standard, and loading manuals are full of data (plus it will cleanup in a 30-06 barrel)

Magman.....I don't know exactly how much velocity you are looking for but I have a reamer for my 300 Sherman that would be an easy switch from an '06. I shoot my 190's at 3050 in a 28" barrel and the 180's will exceed 3100'. I was a little reluctant to post this because I feel like I've been over promoting my "stuff" a little lately. Guess I'm just enthusiastic about it all:D......Rich

The 308 Norma is all I can think of as a standard cartridge that I have worked with. Shorter than the 300 win mag but same performance. Slightly faster than the 300 wsm. Nearly identical to the popular 30-338 winchester wildcat but in a factory offering. Same as necking the 264 winchester, 7mm rem mag to 30 cal. All are the same thing.

One of the 30-375 Ruger wildcats sounds like what your looking for. About the same case capacity as the 300 Ackley but a little shorter than the 300 Win Mag. The accuracy load for mine with 26" barrel is 3066 fps with the 208 Amax. although mine is throated a little too long to touch the lands and feed form the magazine.
Case capacity of mine is around 97 grains water capacity which I believe is about 8 grains less than the 300-338 Norma and it uses a standard magnum bolt face.
The one drawback is that you need to turn the necks.

Thank you all for your replies....I certainly have a lot of options to consider. While it seems there are not too many options that will work with a short/mid length action, there certainly are plenty that should fit into a standard 30.06 lenth long action without having to worry about COAL not fitting into the mag.
I'm going to have a lot of thinking ahead of me.
